Software Engineer, Senior

Location: Dayton, Ohio (Hybrid: In Office & Home) | Position Type: Full‑time. Responsibilities Design, develop, test, evaluate, implement, maintain, and administer new and/or existing software systems. Apply understanding of systems acquisition, hardware/software integration, system requirements analysis and allocation, computer systems architecture, and testing & evaluation. Use software assurance practices and tools, including architecture and design analysis tools, origin analyzers, source code weakness analyzers, and binary analyzers. Review, develop, and update program documentation for software engineering relevant requirements. Support the development of the software development strategy and Software Development Plan (SDP). Apply knowledge of aeronautical vehicle systems and/or airborne or ground systems avionics operational flight program capabilities. Apply DoD, AF, and common engineering/scientific principles, processes, and procedures to improve performance and sustainability of existing and future AF and joint service weapon systems. Support System Integrity Programs, including Mechanical Systems Integrity Program (MECSIP) and maintain Critical Safety Item (CSI) list. Understand and execute Air Force Policy Directive (AFPD) 62‑6, USAF Airworthiness, associated AFIs and Airworthiness Bulletins. Translate user requirements into weapons system requirements for design, development, fabrication, test, and evaluation. Assist in developing requirements and technology needs into action plans and policies for manufacturing, operations, re‑manufacturing, and de‑militarization/disposal. Perform technical/mission analyses, develop system concepts, and conduct technological/trade‑off assessments. Provide rapid‑response engineering service and support for critical supportability problems. Support and assist in conducting the system safety engineering program, including mishap risk assessments. Assist in performing material solution analyses leading up to design reviews. Support documentation and presentation materials for cost, schedule, and performance limits. Assist in translating user requirements into system requirements for deployment. Assist in producing or reviewing technical evaluations, engineering studies, reports, analyses, and acquisition plans. Assist in developing and collecting technical data and inputs for staff summary packages and executive briefings. Support project team meetings, working groups, and reviews: SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, TCM, TIM, FCA, PCA, PRR, PMR. Analyze equipment and software deficiencies, recommend corrections, and develop solutions. Assist the USG in engineering evaluation of prime and subcontractor recommendations for operational and support issues. Assist in the development and evaluation of IMP, IMS, and Systems Engineering Detail Schedule (SEDS) engineering cost estimates. Perform advisory role for program weapon system contractor source selections on all engineering related requirements. Assist in disciplined engineering activities to assure OSS&E for all products. Follow Life Cycle Systems Engineering (LCSE) and OSS&E‑related AFIs and supplements. Assist with establishing, implementing, and adhering to LCSE processes to ensure OSS&E compliance. Assist with the implementation of the SEP throughout program operations and advise USG of needed corrective actions. Participate in value stream mapping activities and Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century (AFSO21) program facilitation. Translate production and operational requirements into design, fabrication, and testing objectives. Generate and manage configuration management, data management, and risk management processes and plans. Assist in producing and/or reviewing technical evaluations, engineering studies, reports, analyses, and acquisition plans. Assist in milestone preparation and engineering evaluation of OEM and subcontractor recommendations. Apply OSS&E and airworthiness processes, risk assessments, safety analysis, and recommendations. Qualifications Demonstrated knowledge of software engineering support for design, development, testing, evaluation, implementation, maintenance, and administration of software systems. Understanding of systems acquisition, integration, and requirements analysis. Extensive knowledge in software assurance practices and tools. Experience with aeronautical vehicle systems and avionics operational flight program capabilities. Experience applying DoD, AF, and MIL‑HDBK‑516C airworthiness certification criteria. Proficiency in evaluating and maintaining Safety and OSS&E compliance for weapons systems. Strong problem‑identification, impact assessment, and corrective action development skills. Required Experience Bachelor’s degree in an ABET‑accredited engineering discipline plus a Master’s degree in engineering (Master’s need not be ABET‑accredited) and at least 12 years of experience in the respective technical discipline, with 5 years in the DoD, **or** Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited institution and 15 years of experience in the respective technical discipline, with 5 years in the DoD. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams) and Adobe Acrobat. U.S. Citizenship required; Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance required.
