Surgical Technologist II

Job Summary Prepares surgical set‑up for procedures; observes and anticipates the needs of the surgeon during the procedure; functions within a sterile field; functions as a surgical assistant. Work Environment Works primarily in a clinical setting. May be exposed to infectious, contagious, or blood‑borne diseases, hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids, waste, and hazards from electrical/mechanical equipment. May be subject to burns and cuts. Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements including accidents, injuries, and illness. Essential Functions Drapes patients for surgical procedures and assists the surgical team during operative procedure. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Maintains and cares for equipment supplies. Documents maintenance and repairs and troubleshoots equipment needs when necessary. Performs assisting duties within the scope of a practicing CST Level II. Performs other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements Stand for periods up to twelve hours, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, talk, hear, and smell. Lift 50 pounds 50% of the time and up to 100 pounds 50% of the time in order to move anesthetized patients. Possess fine manual dexterity skills to assist with operative procedures. Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), peripheral vision, depth perception, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Mental Requirements Ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations; write reports, correspondence, and/or manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions. Perform basic math functions, understand verbal communication, define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and interpret verbal, nonverbal, and written instructions. Population Served This position primarily interacts with all age groups, genders and ethnicities and provides direct patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, cultural and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or surgical technology military program and a minimum of one year of work experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist required. The Level II practitioner demonstrates a higher level of critical thinking and problem‑solving skills and has met the Level I Certified Surgical Technologist criteria. Credentialed as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (formerly LCC‑ST) required and must be maintained. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required. \u2013 This position is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
