Human Resources Assistant

United States Attorneys' Offices

Responsibilities Process a wide range of personnel actions within various functional areas of personnel management for assigned service areas. Respond to applicants, visitors, and/or telephone callers interested in obtaining employment. Process new employees and conduct orientation sessions on health benefits, life insurance, thrift savings, retirement and military service credit, and deposits/redeposits owed. Review, process and resolve problems/discrepancies related to personnel actions. Collect information for employees and managers/supervisors on employee benefits, and answer questions regarding entitlements. Assemble background investigation packages. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Must be a United States Citizen or National. Required to complete a pre‑employment security investigation and background check, including a drug screening. May be required to complete a probationary or trial period. Selective Service registration required for males born on or after December 31, 1959 (or have an approved exemption). Must meet all eligibility requirements by the closing date and continue to meet them throughout the hiring process; offers can be rescinded if requirements are not met. Federal employees must meet time‑in‑grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date. A USA Hire assessment is required; candidates will receive instructions after submitting the application and must complete it within 48 hours of the closing date. Qualifications Specialized Experience – GS-06 : At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑05 level in Federal service. Experience includes: using automated systems for tracking work‑related processes; entering data into one or more computer systems; obtaining needed information from files or general reference sources; providing office automation support (e.g., creating, copying, editing, storing, retrieving documents); or maintaining administrative files or records. Specialized Experience – GS-07 : At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑06 level in Federal service. Experience includes: briefing new hires on entitlements; providing customer support to internal and external customers; providing office automation support (e.g., creating, copying, editing, storing, retrieving documents); using computers and software programs to extract, revise, or sort information from files, records, or databases; or researching regulations, policies, and/or personnel guidance. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) eligibility provides selection priority if the vacancy is within the applicant’s ICTAP eligibility and the applicant is well‑qualified (score of 85 or better on established ranking criteria). Proof of eligibility must be provided. Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) eligibility provides selection priority if the applicant is a surplus or displaced employee eligible for CTAP, is well‑qualified, and the vacancy is within the applicant’s CTAP eligibility. Proof of eligibility must be provided. Must meet all qualification requirements, including time‑in‑grade, by July 6, 2026. Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement. Benefits The Department of Justice offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Payment of relocation expenses will not be authorized. Veterans' Preference If entitled to Veterans' Preference, indicate the type of preference claimed by checking the appropriate box in the assessment questionnaire and submit required veterans' preference documentation. Selectivity Service Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify registration with the Selective Service System or an exemption.
