NATIVE AMERICAN SPIRITUAL LEADER

Native American Spiritual Leader Under the direction of the Community Resource Manager, this position conducts and/or facilitates Native American spiritual ceremonies, oral traditions, cultural studies, and related work. This position also supervises and reports attendance for at least two incarcerated workers assigned to the Native American Spirit Leader. Responsibilities Provide spiritual and moral guidance and instruction to incarcerated practitioners of the American Indian traditional religion. Facilitate instruction in oral tradition, ethics, cultural heritage, sacred music, drum ceremony, and other aspects of the traditional American Indian religion. Lead ceremonies whenever possible and designate incarcerated people as pipe holders and sweat leaders to conduct them in the absence of the Native American Spiritual Leader. Foster meaningful interaction and understanding between practitioners of the traditional American Indian religion and institution administrators, correctional personnel, and others who have day‑to‑day contact with incarcerated practitioners. Provide family counseling on issues related to having a family member in a rehabilitation center; verify incarcerations marriages; facilitate special ceremonies designed to strengthen family and community ties. Encourage interaction between incarcerated practitioners and the outside American Indian community; interpret for community groups regarding the institutional religious program. Special Requirements Must possess a Native American Tribe, Nation, Band, or Rancheria certificate and provide a copy prior to hire.
