Job Description Maintenance Worker III Purpose Under general supervision, perform building maintenance and plant maintenance tasks. Duties, Functions and Responsibilities Inspect buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance. Repair and maintain heating and cooling systems as required. Install or replace floors and ceramic tiles. Repair or replace electric plugs and cords. Drive vehicles as needed. Perform service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, etc. Repack, change oil/filters, lubricate, etc. Operate drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, and various power saws (e.g., radial arm, skill). Operate acetylene cutting torch, welder, etc. Perform basic plumbing installations/repairs (e.g., install and repair faucets, unclog drains, replace valves). Perform semi-skilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of walls, ceilings, etc. Operate forklift. Read profiles/blueprints. Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised None Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine painting, basic plumbing, and moderate levels of construction. Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine carpentry. Knowledge of basic electricity and plumbing. Knowledge of basic heating and cooling system operations. Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures. Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in ground maintenance. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing. Skill in planning and organizing. Ability to operate power tools and mechanical equipment. Ability to read blueprints. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of building maintenance and construction work, including heating, cooling, electrical, and plumbing systems. Relevant work experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years. Licenses and Certifications Required Texas Class “C” Operator’s License. Physical Requirements Moderate. Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. Preferred Qualifications Professional experience in the following trades: Construction, carpentry, painting, drywall, plumbing, irrigation, flooring, and electrical work. Knowledge of local, state, and federal building codes. Completing assignments created from work orders and maintaining accurate records. Proficient in operating both hand and power tools. Skilled in operating various elevation tools, including ladders, aerial lifts, forklifts, and scissor lifts. Respond to building emergencies when contacted. Experience providing leadership and mentoring. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly. Ability to perform assignments with minimum supervision. Notes to Candidate The Maintenance Worker III is responsible for inspecting buildings and equipment to identify, diagnose, and complete necessary repairs and maintenance to support safe and efficient facility operations. This role performs a wide range of semi‑skilled tasks across multiple trades, including carpentry (repairing furniture and installing or repairing flooring), electrical work (replacing plugs and cords), plumbing installations and repairs, and servicing mechanical systems such as pumps, air handlers, and cooling towers. The position requires a strong understanding of building systems, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively while performing general maintenance and construction tasks efficiently and safely. Work Location All Austin Public Library Locations (Austin, Texas) Salary Range $26.86 – $32.43 per hour Hours and Schedule Full Time / 40 hours per week. Employees will be assigned to either Shift 1 or Shift 2, depending on business need. Shift 1 - Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Shift 2 - Tuesday - Friday 1:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. May occasionally work beyond assigned shift. Must be able to respond to off‑hour emergencies and participate in on‑call rotations. Hours and schedule may vary based on operational and business needs, which may include working evenings, weekends, city emergencies, and holidays. Driving Requirements This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Operator’s License or the ability to acquire one by the hire date. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty‑six (36) months.
