Position Summary: Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool(s), on the pool deck(s) and in surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development and healthy living in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Provides leadership, instruction and motivation for participants in swimming lessons. Essential Functions: Knows and understands all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately and appropriately, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures. Knows, understands and consistently enforces safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool(s) and aquatics area(s). Performs pool chemical testing and maintains accurate records, as required by YMCA standards, policies and procedures and/or the state health department code. Performs daily equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available, as needed. Checks for pool hazards when arriving and continues to monitor risks to prevent accidents before they occur. Maintains vigilant surveillance of the pool and notices a potential victim in 10 seconds and reaches/effectively rescues within 20 seconds. Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff. Communicates rules and policies while being "firm, fair and tactful" and utilizing "Q-1-2" customer service techniques. Maintains all required certifications, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures. Conducts swim lessons, as assigned, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures. Develops swimming and water safety skills using effective organizational patterns, observation, instructional floatation devices and teaching techniques, adjusting for each participant's developmental needs. Creates a positive student experience by providing effective feedback, celebrating success, and encouraging progress. Maintains accurate records of attendance and progress, as required by YMCA standards, policies and procedures. Performs daily equipment checks and reports damaged equipment. Prepare equipment prior to class start based on lesson plans. Organizes and puts away all equipment after use. Attends all staff meetings and trainings, as required by YMCA standards, policies, procedures and/or state health department code requirements. Minimum of four (4) hours life guard in-service per month. Maybe required to conduct private swim lessons, stroke development clinics, or other aquatics programs as needed. Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements. Meets timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Example includes but are not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready for review and approval of time sheets. Qualifications: Minimum age of 16 years and must be at least 5 years older than the oldest youth participant. Demonstrate Lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures. Demonstrate Swim Instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures. Current YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard and obtain YMCA Lifeguard certification within 30 days of hire. Current/or must obtain prior to first scheduled instructional shift: YMCA Swim Instructor Certification and Houston's Adaptive Swim Lesson Training ASHI certification for: BLS, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen and YOTS Child Abuse Prevention Training, Information Security and Awareness, Workplace Harassment and Bullying, Universal Precautions, and New Staff Orientation Assessment.
