Job Summary/Basic Function:


The Center for Civics, Culture and Workforce Development is accepting applications for a Deputy Director for Military Services. This position will serve as the leader of Wright State University's Veteran & Military Center (VMC), responsible for strategic direction, daily operations, student services, and external engagement. This role will also serve as the director of the Leadership and Operations undergraduate reduced credit hour program that is geared towards military personnel. This role drives initiatives that support military connected students so they are successful in understanding benefits and have successful pathways towards success in their academic, and workforce needs. The Deputy will also serve as a central point of contact for campus-wide military engagement including ROTC, ensuring that Wright State is recognized as a premier military-friendly institution.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous active service in U.S. Armed Forces, any branch, with an honorable discharge.
  • Master's degree.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a higher education, military, or veteran services environment.
  • Deep knowledge of military education benefits, ROTC operations, and veteran student support best practices.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage budgets, facilities, and staff effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 20 years' experience with military culture and systems (e.g., prior service in the U.S. Armed Forces, civilian employment with DoD/VA, or leadership in veteran-serving organizations).
  • Two years of teaching experience in higher education to include development in course work and programs.
  • ROTC experience, either as cadre, instructor, or close liaison with ROTC units.
  • Prior supervisory experience with military-connected advising, VA certification staff, or similar student-support teams.
  • Experience building partnerships with DoD, VA, higher education institutions, and local communities.
Essential Functions and percent of time:

Leadership and Administration of the Veteran's Military Center (VMC) - (60%)
  • Provide overall leadership, management, and vision for the VMC aligning with university's commitment to military-connected students and advocates.
  • Supervise and support VMC staff, including the VA Education Benefits Coordinator and Military-Connected Advisors (MCAs), ensuring effective benefits certification, compliance with VA academic approvals, and broad advising opportunities across campus.
  • Coordinate with Wright State offices (Bursar, Financial Aid, Marketing, etc.) to ensure programs for military affiliated students are streamlined.
  • Oversee student employees, peer leaders, and program volunteers who support daily operations, tutoring, events, and community-building.
  • Oversee facility operations, ensuring the 4,500 sq ft VMC and its amenities (study spaces, computer labs, conference rooms, lockers, kitchenette, and media center) are maintained and optimized for student use.
  • Manage budgets, resources, and reporting for the VMC.
  • Lead the VMC Student Champion training program to equip faculty, staff, and students with military cultural awareness and advocacy skills.
  • Provide professional development on topics such as military student transitions, mental health awareness, and veteran success strategies.
Program Responsibilities - (30%)
  • Serve as Program Director for the Leadership and Operations (Reduced Credit Hour) Bachelor's Program, providing academic and operational leadership to support enrollment, retention, and student success. Coordinate program planning (curriculum sequencing, course scheduling, assessment, and continuous improvement) and collaborate with academic advising, marketing, faculty, and military partners (including Wright-Patterson AFB) to deliver a military-responsive learning experience. In accordance with University policy and required approvals.
  • Teach and help develop courses in the reduced credit hour program. Teaching load should be no more than one class per semester.
  • Ensure quality through continued evaluation of the program.
Military and Community Partnerships - (10%)
  • Build and maintain strong interconnected relationships with Department of War units such as ROTC, WPAFB, and other military and veteran-serving partners to align campus support with partner mission needs and student-success objectives.
  • Promote and coordinate related activities, events, and programming in collaboration with unit leadership.
  • Identify, develop, and support opportunities for military affiliated students and partners to ensuring Wright State's support of the military stakeholders is effective and outcome driven.
  • Represent Wright State and the VMC at local, regional, and national military-related events.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Ohio Department of Veterans Services, and veteran-serving nonprofits as identified by the university.
  • Coordinate campus military events, ceremonies, and recognition activities, ensuring strong university representation.
