Job Details Posting Date: 06/04/26 Application Deadline: 06/11/26 Pay Range: $28.85 - $46.75 hourly Job Type: Unclassified Department: Planning and Development Position Overview As the Building Plans Examiner, you will review residential, commercial, and other construction plans to ensure completeness, accuracy, and conformance to applicable building codes, ordinances, national standards, and zoning regulations. You will also provide customer information and assistance related to the development process, including planning, building, zoning, code enforcement, drainage review, and maintenance of records using the County's automated permitting system and GIS. Benefits Work with a greater purpose Tuition reimbursement Exceptional work‑life balance Opportunities for growth and development within Maricopa County Low‑cost, high‑value healthcare for you and your qualifying dependents Child care benefits including access to our on‑site center Maricopa County Kids Club Paid vacation, sick time, and parental leave Extensive wellness program, including healthcare premium discounts Maricopa County participates in the Arizona State Retirement System with a 12% monthly contribution and 100% employer match on Day 1 Qualifications Three years of experience in architectural, residential, or commercial building plan review High school diploma Post‑secondary education in Urban Planning, Urban Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or a related field may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis Valid Arizona driver’s license upon hire Preferred Experience Experience conducting research, analyzing building construction and land‑use controls issues Customer service experience Building Plans Examiner or Building Inspector certification from IBC, IAPMO, or IAEI Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical plan review experience Responsibilities Review residential and commercial building permit applications and civil/site plans for compliance with adopted building codes and ordinances, state statutes, federal/state regulations Review aerial and floodplain maps to gather information and determine the level of additional review required for permit issuance Initiate and notify the public of address changes Serve as subject matter expert displaying deep understanding of department functions Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, staff members, governmental agencies, contractors, and the public to explain and administer development requirements and codes (planning, building, zoning, code enforcement, drainage review) Perform other duties as assigned Working Conditions Requires lifting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly; requires walking or standing Typically office or administrative work; not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions Selection Procedure Consideration only for candidates who submit online applications Communication primarily through email and Workday application profile Must pass pre‑employment background and/or fingerprint investigation; drug and alcohol testing for safety‑sensitive positions Maricopa County is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all applicants.
