Police Officer LATERAL (Experienced Officers)

IMPORTANT ITEMS TO NOTE

This exam is for experienced law enforcement officers only. Applicants who meet all criteria for lateral entry are eligible. If you are not currently a certified law enforcement officer or do not have the required experience, please apply for the entry‑level police officer position.

HIRING PROCESS

Selected candidates will: (1) submit an application; (2) complete two civil service exam components—Frontline National (Law Enforcement) Exam and Public Safety Self‑Assessment (Parts 1 & 2); (3) attend a virtual oral board interview via Microsoft Teams; (4) undergo background check, medical evaluation, psychological exam, and polygraph exam; and (5) receive a final offer of employment upon successful completion of all steps.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Provide public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. Operate a patrol car and patrol city streets, businesses, and other areas to deter criminal activity and promote public safety. Investigate hazardous conditions, conduct initial investigations of crimes and crime scenes, and assist detectives in criminal investigation work. Arrest and/or detain suspected law violators; review facts of incidents to determine criminal or statutory violations. Record facts to prepare reports documenting incidents and activities. Render first aid to accident victims and other persons requiring assistance. Transport individuals in custody and present evidence and testimony in judicial settings. Work shift hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as police service is required 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS

Be at least 20½ years of age. Hold United States citizenship, legal permanent residency, or be a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient. Have a high school diploma or GED. Have two years of post‑academy experience as a certified law enforcement officer with full law enforcement power and duties within the last 36 months.

MINIMUM EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Drug Use No use of marijuana within the last 12 months. No use of cocaine or crack within the last five years. No use of club drugs (e.g., ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol, MDMA) within the last three years. No use of hallucinogens, LSD, mushrooms, or psilocybin within the last five years. No use of PCP, angel dust, wet, phencyclidine, or khat within the last five years. No use of opium, morphine, or heroin within the last five years. No use of methamphetamine, crank, crystal, ice, speed, glass, or amphetamine within the last five years. No use of any illegal drug while employed in a criminal justice or law enforcement capacity. No manufacturing, cultivating, selling, or facilitating the sale of illegal drugs. Employment offers are conditioned upon pre‑employment drug screening confirming abstinence. Traffic Record Disqualifying infractions include driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, or hit & run. Suspension of driver’s license within five years of exam date. Three or more moving violations within five years. Two or more accidents within five years where the candidate was at fault or charged with a moving violation. Criminal History Any adult felony conviction. Any misdemeanor or felony conviction while employed in a criminal justice or law enforcement capacity. Any domestic violence conviction. Employment Record History of terminations or departures in lieu of termination may result in disqualification. Financial Record Failure to pay income tax or child support. Excessive credit card debt or unresolved accounts in collection may result in disqualification. Professional Appearance Applicants must maintain a professional appearance. SPD will review tattoos, branding, voluntary disfigurement, or scarification on a case‑by‑case basis. Other Items A valid Washington State driver's license is required prior to hiring. Ability to type at least 35 words per minute is highly desirable. Seattle residence is not required for application or appointment.
