Position Summary: The Navigation Officer is responsible to the Master for the safe navigation of the vessel and all navigation/routing requirements. This positions primary responsibility is to assist the Master in developing passage plans, as well as maintaining up-to-date information in Port manuals. Employees may be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management. All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with the Company's Safety, Quality and Environmental standards. Qualifications: · OIC in Navigation Watch and/or Chief Officer’s License*· Training in accordance with STCW · GMDSS Certificate holder. · Previous experience as a Watch OfficerCompetency: - Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) with Certificate of Competency (CoC) and an STCW endorsement with allowed for ship tonnage limitations for the deck officer on a sea going merchant ship. Job Skills/Results:Operational Effectiveness: · Deck officer of the Watch. Performs navigational watchkeeping duties while at sea and supervision of cargo work while in port, as assigned by the Master or Chief Officer. · Performs watch keeping according to the Master’s Standing Orders, BPG and SMS. · Performs anchoring/berthing or mooring station duties as assigned by the Master and · conduct pre-pilotage/port checks on Bridge equipment as directed by the Master. · Prepares voyage plans and itinerary speed templates and forwarding to the Technical Director and the Fleet Captain. · Provides the Chief Engineer with Navigation information from one port to the other on the completion of each leg of the cruise. · Ensures the latest edition of all electronic and paper navigational charts and publications pertinent to the vessel’s current and expected itineraries are onboard and maintained in good condition. Reviews all charts/publications that exist onboard and ensures they are posted at various locations for guest’s to view. · Responsible for the daily winding of the chronometers, keeping a record book of their errors. · Ensures all ship’s clocks, including those located in guests’ accommodation/lounges, are always showing the correct time zone. In case of change, he/she must issue/distribute relative notes to all heads of departments the day before. · Maintains all navigation equipment in good working order and is fully aware for their handling and operation. · Keeps records of ship’s compass’ errors on the Gyro, Magnetic. · Attends to the operation and maintenance of the ship’s steering gear and automatic pilot. · Responsible for all entries in Log Book, following also all entries made by other Deck Officers during their watch. · Aware of the contents of the daily weather reports keeping Master and Staff Captain/ Chief Mate informed accordingly. Responsible for the good condition of the meteorological instruments (Barometers, Barograph, Psychrometer, etc.). · Details engine movements during maneuvering time are entered in the log book (for ships without automatic recording system). · Attends to the good condition of all flags (International code, Company ensigns, national flags, etc.) being responsible for the ship’s dressing in port as necessary. · Responsible for the good condition of Festoon lights (if applicable) and their use in ports in cooperation with the Chief Electrical Engineer. · Takes care of the navigation lights, including the emergency ones. · Prepares the requisitions regarding stores and spares required for his/her department, subject to Staff Captain’s approval. · Responsible before ship’s departure and before ship’s arrival in port to make the necessary checks in accordance with established company procedures. · May be required to tests and maintain on a daily, weekly and monthly basis a per SOLAS and ISM regulations, all emergency supply sources (Accumulators, batteries and uninterrupted power supply) of all emergency equipment located in the Bridge and Radio Room. · Responsible for cost containment through the proper use, handling and maintenance of records, reports, bridge stationary inventories, supplies and equipment. · Conducts workstation spot checks to ensure items are correctly stored to minimize deterioration and waste. · To be fully conversant with the use of the GMDSS equipment and is over all in charge of the GMDSS radio station. · Update checklists, ship’s particular, telephone lists and etc. · Update tidal information for ports of call.LEADERSHIP: Leadership Effectiveness: · Stays “above the line” and accepts ownership for achieving results in all areas of accountability including ratings, revenue, expenses, USPH VSP, Workplace Safety and Crew Satisfaction · Inspires team through encouragement and recognition of outstanding performance · Resolves conflict with fact-based communication · Fosters team unity and inspires commitment to Expedition Cruises · Collaborates well and works up, down and across the organization · Creates a climate of trust and mutual respect Brand Culture: · Knows our brand standards and holds team accountable for executing against them at all times · Ensures team is well trained capable of consistently delivering against the standards · Guest facing communication is professional, on brand and visually appealing · Is a role model for others · Exhibits professional leadership presence, positive energy and passion in all situations · Brings out the best in his/her team through authenticity, care and humility Talent: · Ensures the effective training of all crew, including direct reports · Coaches and develops direct reports and high potential members of the team · Provides candid performance feedback and takes appropriate action to improve performance · Accurately identifies talent and follows the company’s promotions process · Computer Literate Physical & Language Requirements: · While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. · All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. · All shipboard employees must be able to communicate in the English language in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.
