Job Title: Conventional Machinist
Job Description

This role focuses on precision machining as an inside machinist, operating conventional lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, and presses. The position involves a high volume of shaft work, as well as boring and bushing of bearing housings, requiring strong technical ability, attention to detail, and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality parts.

Responsibilities

• Operate conventional lathes to machine shafts and other components to precise specifications.
• Set up and run horizontal and vertical milling machines for a variety of machining operations.
• Use presses and related shop equipment to complete machining and assembly tasks.
• Perform shaft work, including turning, facing, threading, and other required operations, which constitutes a significant portion of daily work.
• Carry out boring and bushing of bearing housings, ensuring correct fit, alignment, and surface finish.
• Interpret and follow drawings, measurements, and specifications to produce accurate parts.
• Inspect finished workpieces using appropriate measuring tools to verify dimensional accuracy and quality.
• Maintain equipment in good working order by performing routine checks, cleaning, and basic preventive maintenance.
• Follow established shop procedures and safety practices while working with machinery and tools.
• Collaborate with other shop personnel to plan work, resolve machining issues, and meet production goals.

Essential Skills

• Proven ability to operate conventional lathes in a production or job-shop environment.
• Hands-on experience working with horizontal and vertical milling machines.
• Capability to safely and effectively operate presses and related shop machinery.
• Strong skills in shaft machining, including turning, facing, and related operations.
• Experience with boring and bushing of bearing housings and similar components.
• Ability to read and interpret measurements and follow technical instructions or specifications.
• Solid mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining processes.
• Attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
• Ability to work independently inside a machine shop environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience as an inside machinist in a shop setting.
• Familiarity with a variety of conventional machine shop tools and equipment.
• Strong problem-solving skills when dealing with challenging setups or tolerances.
• Good communication skills to coordinate work with other shop personnel.
• Organizational skills to manage multiple jobs and maintain an orderly work area.

Work Environment

This position is based in a machine shop located in Chesapeake. You will work indoors in a traditional shop environment, operating conventional lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, and presses throughout the day. The role involves standing for extended periods, working around active machinery, and handling metal components and tooling. Standard shop attire is expected, including appropriate work clothing and protective gear suitable for a machining environment, in compliance with safety guidelines.

This is a Contract position based out of Chesapeake, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
