Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Duties The James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) located in North Chicago, Illinois is the nation’s only fully integrated facility that supports Active Duty Naval service members, Naval recruits, and our nation’s Veterans. Our mission is to "Ready Warriors and Care For Heroes." We are actively seeking a highly qualified, board‑certified Neurologist to join our team. As a Staff Neurologist, you will report to the Chief of Neurology in the Medicine Service Directorate and provide direct patient care for a broad range of age groups and Neurology conditions. Services include inpatient consultations, ambulatory clinic referrals, and Tele‑Health services. You will perform examinations, consultative services, manage patient conditions, and apply office‑based treatments. As a teaching institution, you will educate health‑professional trainees and hold a clinical instructor position at our academic affiliate. You will participate in medical staff meetings, relevant committees, quality assurance programs, and assist the facility to meet established performance measures in Neurology. Chart reviews and coordination with other medical staff members are also part of the role. Major Duties and Responsibilities Provide direct patient care in the ambulatory clinic setting and inpatient units. Provide timely screening and resolution of consultations from other disciplines. Provide a range of therapeutic interventions specific to Neurology and exercise clinical privileges for diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation, and management. Order diagnostic tests and interpret findings to make treatment decisions; document care in the medical record in keeping with the Medical Center Staff bylaws. Provide supervisory oversight for health‑professional trainees assigned to the Neurology Service. Collaborate on the clinical care of physician assistants as appropriate; participate in team meetings and treatment‑planning conferences. Ensure the practice of medicine aligns with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies, clinical practice guidelines, VHA standards, national statutes, and regulations. Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Recruitment Incentive (Sign‑on Bonus) May be authorized for a highly qualified individual. EDRP Authorized Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply for incentive. Pay Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases. Paid Time Off 50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days of paid absence for CME). Retirement Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA contribution. Insurance Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement). Licensure One full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. state or territory. CME Potential $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification). Malpractice Free liability protection with tail coverage provided. Contract No physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting. Requirements – Conditions of Employment U.S. citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA policy. All applicants selected for a testing‑designated position are subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment; refusal results in denial. Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Subject to background/security investigation. Online onboarding required; acceptable identification forms must be provided (including REAL‑ID compliance). Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all VA health care personnel. Probationary period may be required. Complete all application requirements as detailed in the announcement. Basic Requirements U.S. citizenship (non‑citizens only when no qualified citizens are available). Dr. Medicine or equivalent degree from a school approved by the VA for the year of completion. Current, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training completed in an accredited core specialty (ACGME or AOA) or equivalent U.S. experience following foreign residency. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement Board Certified or Board Eligible in Neurology. Preferred Experience Neurological care for both outpatients and inpatients. Administration of Botox injections. Management of vagal nerve stimulators. Physical Requirements Light carrying (under 15 pounds), reaching above shoulder height, use of fingers with both hands, walking up to 1 hour, standing up to 1 hour, and both legs required. Exposure to blood and body fluids may occur. Health examination required prior to assignment and periodically thereafter per Occupational Health Clinic policy. Intermittent exposure to environmental factors (indoor/outdoor work, close contact with others, protracted or irregular hours) is possible. Education Doctor of Medicine or equivalent. Degree must be from an accredited institution (LCME or AOAC) and must have been earned in the year of completion. For foreign graduates, verification with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is required if claimed.
