Major Duties

• Quantify, prioritize, and manage risk by proposing and applying the hierarchy of hazard control and determining equivalent protections
• Accomplishes projects of a complex, independent nature, requiring the conduct of in-depth studies and development of guidelines and procedures for which existing coverage is inadequate or nonexistent
• Obtains information from witnesses and officials; studies operations from resultant data; determines causes of accidents and makes recommendation to prevent recurrence
• Maintains, tracks and oversees all identified safety and health hazards, utilizing a hazard tracking system and documenting hazards any residual risks and corrective actions

Qualification Summary

To qualify for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist your qualifications must include: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Conduct special studies and/or hazard analyses of various processes, physical and environmental conditions for the purpose of identifying, isolating and eliminating or mitigating uncontrolled safety and health hazards. Prepares reports and makes analysis of accidents and operations to determine problem areas which need study or correction. Establishes or maintains databases as needed for safety and health functions and efforts to assure timely data and information to support risk management and safety and health related decision making Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
