Vehicle Maintenance Specialist II
1.0 FTE/8 hours per day
Start Date: July 1, 2026
Purpose
Provide lead work direction and participate in the work of personnel engaged in the skilled maintenance, repair and servicing of a wide variety of District vehicles and other equipment. Drive school bus in emergency situations or when deemed necessary.
This is the senior level class within the Vehicle Maintenance Specialist series. Positions at this level are distinguished from Vehicle Maintenance Specialist I by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of work assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to the classes within the series, including the exercise of considerable independent thinking, judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receive supervision, guidance and direction from Director. Exercise no supervision but may provide guidance and direction to the Vehicle Maintenance Specialist I.
Qualifications
To perform successfully in this position, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
- Hold a valid Oregon School Bus Certificate and Class B CDL, demonstrate and maintain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all applicable laws, regulations, rules and District guidelines
- Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, and responsibilities of a school bus driver as required by the State and District policies and procedures
- Ability to drive a school bus safely and a driving record that conforms to ODE requirements
- Knowledge of principles and practices or work coordination
- Extensive knowledge of the mechanical operation of vehicles and small engines
- Three years experience in mechanical repairs
- Knowledge of diagnostic equipment such as scopes, scanners and laptops
- Computer skills sufficient to use district e-mail and complete maintenance reports
- Knowledge of basic methods, tools and equipment used in maintenance repair of vehicles and other equipment
- Knowledge of safe work practices
- Ability to plan, estimate, coordinate and schedule work of others
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication
- Ability to work harmoniously and communicate with students, parents and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds
Essential Responsibilities
- Coordinating the work of other technical personnel and responding to technical questions regarding repairs
- Performing journey-level preventative maintenance, diagnosing and repairing buses and district vehicles, to include but not limited to, checking transmission, motor, electrical system, mechanical system, tires, suspension system and brakes
- Performing tune-ups of engines, repair or replace electrical systems and components
- Maintaining records necessary for the ordering of parts, supplies and repair orders for service records
- Assist in parts processing and inventory control
- Ordering tires and maintaining body work
- Inspect and diagnose a variety of mechanical, electrical and body work needs and repair accordingly
- Read and apply technical and mechanical diagrams, schematics and repair manuals
- Locate, diagnose and repair defects in vehicles and other equipment
- Install new equipment and parts and repair existing equipment and parts
- Repair tractors, mowers, and other small engines
- Perform tune-ups as needed
- Maintain vehicle records for maintenance and compliance with safety rules and State statutes
- Cultivate and model a respectful working environment

Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Sherwood School District 88J and Oregon School Employees Association Chapter #103.
