Director of Operations

A growing mid-to-large regional residential homebuilder based in Auburn, Alabama is seeking a Director of Operations to lead residential construction operations across multiple markets.

This individual will lead the Project Management team and be responsible for maintaining construction speed, quality, accountability, and consistency across the production organization. The Director of Operations will monitor schedules and performance at a macro level, coach team members through challenges, and resolve day-to-day issues that fall outside established processes.

The ideal candidate is an experienced residential construction leader who combines strong technical knowledge with sound judgment, decisive problem-solving, people leadership, and the ability to operate effectively in the gray areas of homebuilding.

This is a highly visible leadership position with significant influence over production capacity and the company's ability to continue scaling its operations.
Key Accountabilities

• Lead, coach, and manage the residential Project Management team across multiple markets.
• Maintain strong accountability around construction schedules, quality standards, and production performance.
• Oversee residential construction schedules at a macro level while ensuring Project Managers effectively manage their assigned homes, trades, and pipelines.
• Maintain established construction cycle times and production expectations.
• Ensure construction speed is achieved without compromising quality or customer expectations.
• Serve as the primary operational escalation point for Project Managers when issues fall outside established processes or require leadership judgment.
• Quickly assess construction, subcontractor, labor, scheduling, and field challenges and implement practical, cost-conscious solutions.
• Independently resolve the majority of routine operational issues without unnecessary escalation to executive leadership.
• Create a culture of accountability, urgency, problem-solving, and ownership across the Project Management team.
• Coach and develop Project Managers to improve decision-making, construction knowledge, and overall performance.
• Monitor key production metrics, including schedule performance, cycle time, quality, and team execution.
• Partner with senior operations leadership on production planning, staffing, and organizational growth.
• Work within established purchasing, trade partner, scheduling, and construction processes.
• Conduct periodic jobsite visits to remain connected to field conditions, construction quality, and the finished product.
• Effectively utilize construction technology, scheduling tools, and online management systems.
• Support continued growth across existing and future markets.

Minimum Requirements

• Significant experience in residential homebuilding or residential construction operations.
• Prior experience directly managing Project Managers, Construction Managers, Builders, Superintendents, or similar field-based construction professionals.
• Demonstrated ability to oversee multiple residential projects, communities, or markets simultaneously.
• Strong working knowledge of the residential construction process from sitework/grading through completion and closing.
• Proven ability to manage aggressive construction schedules and maintain consistent cycle times.
• Strong construction problem-solving skills with the ability to make timely and appropriate decisions without excessive escalation.
• Ability to balance schedule, quality, cost, customer expectations, and field realities.
• Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
• Ability to operate effectively within structured processes while exercising sound judgment when issues fall outside the established playbook.
• Strong technology aptitude and comfort working with scheduling and online construction management systems.
• Ability to work primarily from the company's Auburn, Alabama office with periodic travel to jobsites and operating markets.
• Willingness to relocate to the Auburn market if not currently local.

Preferred Requirements

• Experience with a medium to large regional or national residential homebuilder .
• Experience in a Director of Construction, Director of Operations, Area Construction Manager, Regional Construction Manager, Production Manager, Senior Construction Manager, or comparable leadership role.
• Background in higher-end production, semi-custom, or custom residential construction.
• Experience working for an organization with standardized schedules, purchasing processes, trade partner programs, and established operating systems.
• Experience supporting residential construction across multiple communities or geographic markets.
• Demonstrated success maintaining fast construction cycle times while preserving quality.
• Experience using technology and data to improve production visibility, accountability, and execution.
• Experience in a growing organization where operational leadership directly supports increased production capacity.
• Prior experience with a sophisticated builder comparable in operating scale or product quality to larger regional or national homebuilders.
