Sr Engineer I, Mechanical, Ferndale Refinery

Phillips 66 & YOU - Together we can fuel the futureAs a Mechanical Engineer, you will provide mechanical engineering support to the maintenance and turnaround organization. This position coordinates the Engineering and Design process for maintenance and turnaround scopes and supports scope categorization, risk ranking, planning, and execution activities. This role also provides field-oriented technical support for fixed equipment work, troubleshooting, and turnaround execution.What You’ll Do Facilitate the design and implementation of mechanical solutions for fixed equipment, such as pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers, and tanks.Analyze complex engineering challenges, develop and refine equipment specifications, and support installation, operation, and maintenance activities to ensure reliability and compliance.Serve as a technical resource in scope development, planning, execution, and field support for maintenance and turnaround work.Coordinate the piping design process for applicable scope.Develop and review repair plans, engineering drawings, specifications, and test procedures.Support collecting, categorizing, and driving accurate risk ranking of event scope.Analyze work requests and equipment history to support technical recommendations, repair strategies, and scope development.Assist the planning team with conceptual estimates and recommend methodology, equipment, and material requirements.Support production and assembly of work packages and definition of scope-specific hold points as required by plant specifications.Troubleshoot equipment issues and provide practical field support during equipment downtime, plant outages, and turnaround execution.Support management of change requirements and applicable mechanical integrity expectations.Coordinate with maintenance, operations, inspection, reliability, procurement, project controls, and other engineering disciplines to safely and efficiently execute work.Support shop fabrication, field repairs, and construction activities, including awareness of cranes, scaffolds, NDE, welding, and work sequencing.Facilitate the adoption of new technologies and best practices and maintain working knowledge of relevant codes and standards.Foster a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and technical excellence to support refinery reliability and turnaround performance.What You’ll Bring – Required Legally authorized to work in the job posting countryBachelor’s Degree or higher in an Engineering discipline2 or more years of engineering experience in maintenance and turnarounds within a refining environmentWilling and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)Possess a valid driver’s licenseMust be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:Travel up to 5%Operate company vehicle on site premises and/or public roadsWork extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform occasional dutiesTransport articles up to 50 poundsClimb ladders and stairs up to 200 feetWork safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditionsWork outside in harsh weather conditionsWear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipmentMaintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal, including being free of facial hair when requiredWhat Makes You Stand Out – Preferred 4 or more years of experience working as a Maintenance, Turnaround, Reliability, or Discipline Engineer in refining or petrochemical operationsDirect experience with equipment downtime or plant outage technical supportExperience supporting turnaround planning and field executionFamiliarity with stress analysis and applicable industry standards, including: API 579API 571ASME B31.3ASME Section VIIIASME PCC-1ASME PCC-2Experience with Management of Change (MOC) processes and related actionsExperience evaluating equipment maintenance and operating history to support technical recommendationsExperience with construction techniques and sequences, including cranes, scaffolds, NDE, welding, equipment, and toolsExperience coordinating engineering, design, fabrication, or repair support across multiple groupsStrong communication, organizational, and time management skillsAbility to work effectively with crafts, contractors, planners, and cross-functional teams during active executionCompensation Range This position has a base salary range of $141,300 - $172,700.At Phillips 66, we are committed to pay transparency and competitive, equitable compensation. Our compensation programs are designed to reward performance and support career growth.The Ferndale Refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Washington, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation and hydrodesulfurization units. It processes a variety crude oils, including Alaskan North Slope, Canadian and other foreign and U.S. shale crudes, primarily delivered via marine vessel and pipeline. Within the refinery is a rail car crude oil receiving facility with a capacity of 30,000 BPD. This offloading facility, owned by Phillips 66 Partners, makes the receipt of additional crude by rail car possible. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include residual fuel oil, which is supplied to the northwest marine bunker fuel market.
