Perianesthesia Registered Nurse (RN)

Join our team as a Perianesthesia Registered Nurse, where you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality care to patients in all phases of perianesthesia, including Pre-Op, PACU Phase 1, and PACU Phase II. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to ensure effective patient care, utilizing your nursing expertise to assess, educate, and manage patients' needs.

As a Perianesthesia RN, you will function as a team member across various phases of patient care, from preoperative assessment through recovery. You will implement the nursing process according to the Oregon State Board of Nursing and provide patient education while documenting care in the medical record.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist physicians with endoscopic examinations and perform gastric manometer testing.
• Coordinate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure patient readiness for surgery.
• Comprehensively assess patients' status in relation to planned surgery, including physical parameters, lab values, and understanding of procedure.
• Consult with the surgeon, anesthesia, and other providers to address patient issues promptly.
• Prevent avoidable surgery cancellations by addressing concerns proactively.
• Initiate interdisciplinary discharge planning involving patients and caregivers.
• Perform EKGs as needed.
• Manage patient care, including pain control during anesthesia recovery.
• Oversee patients undergoing moderate sedation, ensuring safe medication administration and monitoring.
• Identify and interpret cardiac rhythms, proficient in monitoring equipment usage.
• Conduct assessments related to patients' physical, psychosocial, and learning needs.
• Establish nursing diagnoses and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team on care planning.
• Implement individualized care based on nursing care plans, including medication administration and wound care.
• Provide teaching to patients and families regarding illnesses, medical tests, and wellness promotion.
• Assign, supervise, and direct unlicensed assistive personnel to ensure optimum patient care.
• Document patient assessments, interventions, and teaching in the electronic medical record.
• Evaluate patient care provided and communicate status to the interdisciplinary team.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to take call on a rotating basis; must be able to respond within 30 minutes to the facility.
• Excellent airway management skills.
• Proficient in reading, writing, and conversing effectively in English.
• Exhibit critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Flexible and adaptable to rapidly changing patient and unit needs.
• Demonstrate effective teaching and communication skills.
• Resilient in managing patient crisis and emergency situations.
• Proficient in computer usage, including electronic medical record documentation.
• Maintain consistent attendance at assigned job location.

Education/Certifications/Licenses/Degrees

• Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Oregon.
• American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required by the end of the six-month grace period.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course certification is required by the end of the one-year grace period.
• Specialty certification (CPAN or equivalent) preferred.

Experience

Recent acute care hospital experience within the past five years is preferred.

Physical/Mental/Environmental Requirements

• Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
• May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must utilize standard precautions due to the threat of exposure to blood and body fluids.
• Requires effective communication through reading, writing, and speaking.
• Frequent computer usage is required, necessitating manual dexterity.
