Assistant Aquatics Manager

Job Summary:

UCSF Aquatics makes life better here by inspiring fitness & providing opportunities to learn to swim through safe, fun, & diverse programming. UCSF boasts three swimming pools across two campuses; an outdoor rooftop pool voted best outdoor pool in SF, and two indoor pools, including a deep-water pool on the Parnassus Campus. We offer a diverse array of aquatics programming including an excellent lifeguard service, American Red Cross Learn to Swim programing and certification courses, a US Masters swim team, and a water exercise program. We are looking for a passionate aquatics professional to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Aquatics Manager who is excited to lead a large and diverse group. The Assistant Aquatics Manager will lead a team of over 50 lifeguards and will assist with supervision of other aquatics staff: including coaches and instructors. The Assistant Aquatics Manager will have an opportunity to develop a comprehensive recruitment, training, and professional development program for the lifeguard staff.

Manages the daily operations for programs such as instructional fitness, aquatics or other recreational activities. Has autonomy to analyze and resolve problems and determine appropriate action. Supervises recreation program leaders / instructors.

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Manager, the Assistant Aquatics Manager plans and manages facility and lifeguard operations and supports the programming units of Aquatics for both the Bakar and Millberry Fitness & Recreation Centers. The incumbent is responsible for the planning and management of the Aquatics program, coordinating staff scheduling, facility operations, managing risk and safety, and supervising staff as it relates to the identified program areas. This position performs in-depth analysis and works as a team or independently to administer projects/programs and contributes to service improvements. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of current industry trends and standards; collaborate with team members to design promotions to increase member engagement and participation.

The focus of this job will be on the UCSF pool operations including the hiring, training, supervising, teambuilding, certification and compliance of a team of lifeguards to cover all three UCSF pools including risk management, pool maintenance, chemical balances emptying and filling of pools, compliance and certification of staff. This includes, but is not limited to, hiring, onboarding, initial training and ongoing training of staff in customer service, rescue skills, and best practices.

Program Development

  • Develop and maintain a motivated and trained aquatics staff including recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, and retention.
  • Assist in supervision and analysis of the following programs: adult and youth learn to swim programming, American Red Cross certification courses, masters practices, and water exercise
  • Enhance and maintain quality aquatics facilities and equipment
  • Implement annual goals and objectives
  • Implement and supervise risk management and safety policies/procedures to industry standards
  • Maintain effective departmental communication (including communicating class/program changes through e-mail, memos, and master catalog)
  • Attend trade shows and industry conferences to stay current on industry trends
  • Maintain and manage program materials and records according to UCSF and business unit policies & procedures
  • Review agreements for licensed fitness programs
  • Align program development with department priorities and initiatives
  • Manage the class reservation system (online, phone, in-person) and troubleshoot issues with appropriate parties

  • Responsible for developing and implementing monthly staff in-service trainings, make-up training assignments, and tracking staff attendance for both aquatics programming and operational staff
  • Responsible for weekly staffing schedule and covering shifts during all operating hours for both aquatics programming and operations
  • Teach an array of aquatics programming and classes as needed, such as Lifeguard Training and CPR/First Aid courses, swim lessons, water exercise, and masters swimming
  • Develop and implement staff policies and procedures under direction of Aquatics Manager
  • Maintain records of aquatics personnel certifications, licensing, staff trainings, UC Compliance trainings, and ensuring all staff certifications and trainings are current

  • Develop and determine criteria for all employees' wages based upon UC classifications and market survey
  • Conduct staff performance evaluations and apply corrective action when needed
  • Provide and/or lead professional development for staff in the following areas: customer service, skills training, risk management, and customer retention

Facility and Equipment Maintenance

  • Conduct and supervise safety inspections of pools, decks and equipment

  • Assist in monitoring and reporting financial performance including income projections, payroll expenses, equipment purchases, etc.
