Chair & Professor, Family Medicine & Community Health

The University of Minnesota Medical School seeks a nationally recognized academic physician leader to serve as Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health (DFMCH) following the retirement of Dr. James Pacala, who has led the department since 2017. As one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive medical schools, the University includes campuses in the Twin Cities, Duluth, and St. Cloud and benefits from a unique health sciences environment that brings together schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health, and veterinary medicine. Established more than 50 years ago, DFMCH is one of the original 16 family medicine departments in the United States and is among the largest departments within the Medical School. The department sponsors 10 family medicine residency programs and four fellowships throughout Minnesota, trains 167 residents and fellows annually, and has graduated more than 2,500 trainees since 1971. Nationally recognized for its research excellence, DFMCH has been the top NIH-funded family medicine department in the country for the past three years, averaging nearly $17 million annually in sponsored funding. The department also plays a leading role in advancing the Medical School's healthy aging strategy, including the creation of a new interdisciplinary Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care in partnership with the Department of Medicine.

Reporting to the Dean of the Medical School and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, the Chair will provide strategic leadership for the department's clinical, educational, and research missions while also serving as the Family Medicine Clinical Service Unit Leader within University of Minnesota Physicians. The successful candidate will be a collaborative and visionary academic leader with experience leading complex clinical and academic enterprises, building multidisciplinary partnerships, advancing research and innovation, and mentoring faculty and trainees. Candidates must hold an MD or DO degree, be board certified in Family Medicine, and be eligible for medical licensure in Minnesota.

The base salary range for this position is $400,000-$500,000 commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications, education, and experience. In addition, this leader will be eligible for retirement and additional benefits.
