The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the building, grounds, and production equipment in an industrial lumber yard environment. This role focuses on preventative and corrective maintenance, emergency repairs, and general facility care to ensure all equipment operates safely and reliably so production can consistently meet customer needs. The position works a day shift schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with overtime as required.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all equipment remains in safe operating condition and is available for production to support consistent customer service and operational efficiency.

• Perform timely preventative and predictive maintenance tasks, including logging and documenting all activities for future reference, tracking, and compliance.

• Demonstrate a strong commitment to working safely and follow OSHA guidelines related to Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), forklift operation, machine guarding, and all other applicable laws and regulations.

• Maintain the building and grounds in a safe, clean, and orderly condition for employees, guests, and customers.

• Manage maintenance and repair of assets such as forklifts, combi lifts, standup lifts, and pallet jacks through vendors or other appropriate resources.

• Coordinate with the Maintenance Manager on contract renewals to keep equipment and facilities operational and compliant with current standards and best practices.

• Proactively conduct equipment inspections and safety audits in accordance with company policies and established best practices.

• Participate in Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) reviews, revisions, and improvements to enhance workplace safety.

• Perform landscaping and general facility upkeep to maintain a professional and safe exterior environment.

• Carry out facility painting and weatherization activities to protect and preserve buildings and structures.

• Maintain the overall condition of the yard, including preventative, corrective, deferred, and emergency maintenance tasks.

• Manage emergency spill kits, equipment, and stations throughout the facility to ensure readiness and compliance with safety and environmental standards.

• Oversee hog conveyor function, including monitoring performance and performing or coordinating cleanup and maintenance.

• Use hand and power tools effectively for maintenance, repair, and fabrication tasks as needed.

• Communicate clearly with peers, supervisors, vendors, and other stakeholders to coordinate maintenance activities and report issues.

• Prepare routine reports and track maintenance metrics as required to support continuous improvement and operational visibility.

Essential Skills

• At least 3 years of related experience performing machinery maintenance operations in an industrial environment.

• Strong experience with preventative maintenance and predictive maintenance practices.

• Hands-on experience with hydraulics and pneumatics in an industrial setting.

• Exposure to electrical troubleshooting, including working with faulty circuits and using micrometers.

• Ability to read and interpret schematics, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.

• Experience performing machinery maintenance and troubleshooting on production equipment.

• Basic welding experience, including stick welding and wire feed welding.

• Experience with hand tools and power tools commonly used in maintenance and repair work.

• Experience with forklift maintenance and related material-handling equipment.

• Understanding and adherence to OSHA safety guidelines, including Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), machine guarding, and safe forklift operation.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write routine reports, track maintenance metrics, and communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, vendors, and other internal and external contacts.

• Strong attention to detail with solid organizational and planning skills.

• Ability to effectively prioritize competing tasks and manage resources in a fast-paced environment.

• Willingness and ability to occasionally lift, move, and manipulate up to 75 pounds.

• Comfort working in an industrial lumber yard environment with frequent walking and exposure to outdoor elements.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Advanced electrical maintenance and troubleshooting experience (preferred, not required).

• Fabrication experience, including creating specialty parts (preferred, not required).

• Experience with PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) (preferred, not required).

• Familiarity with fabrication processes in an industrial environment.

• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training or certification (preferred).

• Experience participating in safety programs such as JHA and JSA reviews.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a maintenance team.

Work Environment

This role is based in a lumber yard industrial environment that involves extensive walking and working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The facility includes production equipment, forklifts, combi lifts, standup lifts, pallet jacks, hog conveyors, and other industrial machinery. Work involves regular interaction with mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, as well as routine use of hand and power tools and welding equipment. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety practices, including OSHA guidelines for Lock Out Tag Out, machine guarding, forklift operation, and spill response. Employees perform landscaping, yard upkeep, painting, and weatherization tasks, contributing to the overall condition and appearance of the facility. The role may require occasional lifting and moving of materials up to 75 pounds. Attire should be appropriate for an industrial yard setting, with practical work clothing and suitable footwear for both indoor and outdoor conditions.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Plains, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $34.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
