Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Float Pool

Job Summary

Join our dynamic nursing team in Hilo, Hawaii, as a Registered Nurse in our Medical Surgical Float Pool. This role offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive patient care across various acute care units, including Medical (77 beds), Surgical Acute (Laulima - 18 beds), and occasionally the Cardiovascular Unit (15 beds).

As a Float RN, you will adapt to diverse patient populations and clinical environments, ensuring high-quality care. Typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:8 on nights for Medical, 1:6 for Surgical Acute, and 1:4 for Cardiovascular, though ratios may vary based on unit needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care, assessments, and interventions for medical and surgical patients.
• Float to and provide support across designated Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima), and Cardiovascular units.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, monitoring patient responses.
• Document patient care accurately and timely in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team members to develop and implement individualized care plans.
• Manage and operate medical equipment pertinent to patient care, including wound vacs and chest tubes.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of recent acute care Registered Nurse experience.
• Ability to successfully float between diverse medical and surgical units.

Preferred Qualifications

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Procedural Sedation certification.
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.
• Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.

Skills & Competencies

• Clinical Skills: Acute medical-surgical nursing, patient assessment, medication administration, wound care management (e.g., wound vacs), chest tube management, IV insertion, critical thinking, rapid response.
• Equipment & Systems: Meditech EMR, Pyxis automated dispensing system, Wound Vacs, Chest Tubes.
• Soft Skills: Adaptability, strong communication (verbal and written), teamwork, problem-solving, resilience, ability to prioritize in fast-paced environments.

Licensing Requirements

• Active and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Hawaii by assignment start date.
