Controller

Lead accounting operations and financial reporting across Empath Health’s service lines, including hospice, home health, complete care, community services, and foundations. Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including general ledger activity, consolidations, account reconciliations, accruals, allocations, and financial statement preparation. Establish, maintain, and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to support compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards. Oversee annual audits, tax filings, cost reports, fund accounting, grant reporting, donor-restricted funds, and other nonprofit or healthcare regulatory reporting requirements. Provide technical accounting guidance on complex transactions, fund accounting, grants, restricted contributions, leases, contracts, allocations, and other healthcare-related financial matters. Partner with the CFO and finance leadership to provide financial insights, identify risks and opportunities, and support strategic decision-making. Proactively identify accounting, reporting, process, and control issues; bring forward thoughtful recommendations and execute solutions with limited day-to-day direction. Initially take a hands-on role in key accounting activities as needed to assess current processes, address gaps, improve work quality, and help the team move toward more efficient and reliable practices. Collaborate with FP&A and operational leaders to improve transparency, reporting accuracy, variance explanations, and service-line financial visibility. Create and drive process improvements that streamline workflows, reduce reporting lag time, strengthen data integrity, clarify ownership, and improve the overall effectiveness of the accounting function. Develop, mentor, motivate, and retain a high-performing accounting team, promoting accountability, collaboration, efficiency, accuracy, and professional growth. Partner with FP&A and systems stakeholders to ensure accounting data, reporting structures, allocations, and financial hierarchies support accurate reporting in Workday Financials and Adaptive Insights. Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Active CPA license required. Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive accounting experience, including prior experience serving as a Controller with leadership responsibility for financial reporting and accounting operations. Healthcare experience required, ideally within hospice, home health, PACE, senior care, human services, nonprofit healthcare, or another complex healthcare environment. Nonprofit accounting experience required, including hands-on experience with fund accounting and restricted funds. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, accounting governance processes, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance. Demonstrated experience leading month-end close, consolidations, account reconciliations, audit support, and financial statement preparation. Proven ability to lead, develop, motivate, and hold accounting professionals accountable in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Demonstrated history of taking initiative, building scalable processes, improving team efficiency, and operating effectively without close daily supervision. Hands-on leadership approach, with the ability to work in the details when needed while building scalable processes and developing the team to operate more independently over time. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial systems; strong experience with Workday Financials and Adaptive Insights strongly preferred. Ability to use financial systems and reporting tools to improve accounting workflows, reporting accuracy, data integrity, and financial visibility across service lines. Preferred Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Public accounting experience, particularly with healthcare, nonprofit, or complex multi-entity clients. Experience with cost reports, grant reporting, donor-restricted funds, fund accounting, and healthcare regulatory reporting. Experience supporting foundations, philanthropy, grants, or donor-funded programs in a nonprofit healthcare setting. Experience improving accounting processes, internal controls, financial reporting timelines, and system-enabled workflows. Mastery of Workday Financials and Adaptive Insights, including reporting, financial hierarchies, allocations, and process optimization. #J-18808-Ljbffr
