Job Overview The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries manages and protects the state’s renewable natural resources, including wildlife and aquatic life. The Office of Fisheries supports a strong work ethic, good science, accurate information, and technology to ensure aquatic resources are sustainable for present and future generations. The Biologist position in Marine Fisheries serves as a Coastal Study Area Biologist, domiciled in Orleans Parish. The incumbent collects fishery independent and dependent data from sampling programs, conducts field sampling, maintains biological and environmental data, operates vessels and sampling equipment, collects fishery dependent survey data, and assists in developing aquatic habitat restoration projects. Responsibilities Collect biological and environmental data. Enter and review data collected from field projects. Compile and analyze data, preparing reports of results. Assist in development of aquatic habitat restoration projects. Identify, measure, and record species at various life stages caught in sampling activities. Operate departmental vehicles and vessels to accomplish required duties. Maintain and calibrate equipment. Respond to public and news media inquiries. Send and receive email correspondence. Represent the department to job-related contacts and agencies. Present resource management information to commercial, recreational, professional, and conservation groups, schools, and local officials. Identify equipment and supply needs and may purchase supplies, repairs, and/or equipment. Inspect facilities and records of permit applicants, recommending permit issuance or denial. Qualifications Knowledge of aquatic organisms, specifically estuarine and marine finfish and shellfish. Knowledge of and experience with common fishery independent sampling gear, including gill nets, trammel nets, seines, trawls, and oyster dredges. Experience with operation and maintenance of outboard powered vessels. Good observational and analytical skills. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Knowledge of research and statistical methods. Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources. Position Specific Details Work Location: New Orleans, LA. Appointment Type: Probational Appointment, Job Appointment, Detail to Special Duty, Promotion (open to all statewide classified and agency-wide permanent status employees). Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available. Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Biologist 1, 2, or 3. Compensation: Salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
