Job Summary: IN-ISP-Paralegal, Public Records
Location: Indianapolis, IN, 46204 | On-site | Monday-Friday, 7am-3pm or 8am-4pm

About the Role
Join the Indiana State Police Legal Office as a Paralegal specializing in Public Records. Play a pivotal role supporting the Department's Legal Counsel by ensuring compliance with public records law and facilitating timely, accurate records processing. This position is ideal for detail-oriented professionals seeking hands-on experience in legal research, public records administration, and the opportunity to contribute to public service in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

- Process incoming Public Records Requests and ensure timely, accurate fulfillment
- Research statutes, judicial decisions, and legal codes to support determinations on record release
- Apply Indiana Code and the Access to Public Records Act (APRA) to review and respond to requests
- Prepare, redact, and process body and dash camera footage in accordance with legal requirements
- Propose updates to Indiana Code and Administrative Code language related to public records
- Assemble and organize documentation required for subpoenas and discovery requests
- Index, file, and manage original legal documents with confidentiality and precision
- Provide professional phone support for the Legal Office and assist with other administrative duties as needed

Required Skills and Experience

- High school diploma or GED
- Paralegal certification with a minimum of 2 years' paralegal experience
- Basic computer proficiency
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Clear, professional communication (written and verbal)
- Experience handling sensitive or confidential information

Preferred Skills

- Proficiency with LexisNexis and Westlaw
- Experience in program and procedure development
- Paralegal competency certification (NFPA, CLA/CP, or equivalent)
- Associate's degree or higher in Paralegal Studies with certification
