RN Med/Surg

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Med/Surg unit is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing interventions and patient care plans. This role involves providing high-quality patient care according to established standards, protocols, and policies while respecting patient dignity and individuality. The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, educates patients and families, safely administers medications and intravenous therapy, and ensures accurate documentation and communication to promote continuity of care. The position requires at least one year of experience, with preferred experience in Med/Surg, Telemetry, or Pediatrics. Responsibilities:

• Assess and reassess patients to develop and implement individualized nursing care plans.
• Provide patient care consistent with standards of practice, protocols, and policies.
• Deliver patient and family education tailored to learning needs and readiness.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to plan and prepare patients and families for discharge.
• Delegate and supervise nursing interventions performed by other staff appropriately.
• Prioritize patient care, seeking assistance and reassigning personnel as necessary.
• Document all pertinent data, therapeutic interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely.
• Report patient status during shift changes to ensure continuity of care.
• Serve as preceptor or trainer to colleagues and participate in professional development.
• Identify and report risks to patient safety and medical errors.
• Address ethical issues in patient care with appropriate plans.
• Administer medications and intravenous therapy safely and according to orders and protocols.
• Assess and manage patient pain, document responses, and communicate with physicians as needed.
• Complete medication reconciliation documentation for attending providers.
• Interpret and document cardiac rhythms and initiate treatment plans per provider orders.
• Provide ongoing assessment and education to surgical patients and families.
• Recognize and report abnormal patient progress to physicians promptly.
• Utilize pain management devices and techniques effectively.
• Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot surgical patient equipment such as traction devices, feeding pumps, chest tubes, and drains.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Minimum of one year nursing experience preferred in Med/Surg; Telemetry and Pediatrics experience also preferred.
• ACLS certification upon hire or active BLS certification with ACLS obtained within 60 days of hire.
• Demonstrated mature professional behaviors including tact, empathy, diplomacy, and teamwork.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred.
• Experience in telemetry and pediatric nursing.
• Preceptor or instructor experience.

Special Considerations:

• Ability to exert physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds and performing physical tasks such as stooping and kneeling.
• Work involves a fast-paced hospital environment requiring flexibility, initiative, and strong interpersonal skills.
• Must adhere to organizational behavioral expectations including achievement motivation, concern for order, and customer service orientation.

Scheduling:

• Shifts are assigned based on unit needs; may include day, evening, or night shifts.
• May require flexibility to cover shifts and participate in on-call rotations as applicable.
