Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Controller role based in the San Francisco Bay Area with some flexibility to work remote periodically. The Controller will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, monthly and quarterly closes, consolidation, and preparation of internal financial statements for the multi-family real estate portfolio. This role will manage accounting staff, review journal entries and account reconciliations, and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting. The Controller will maintain and improve internal controls, oversee cash management, and coordinate budgeting, forecasting, and variance analyses with asset management and operations teams. The role will also liaise with external auditors and tax advisors, support regulatory and lender reporting, and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency, compliance, and financial transparency. Qualifications Strong technical accounting foundation, including GAAP, financial reporting, and multi-entity consolidation. Experience with real estate or property management accounting, including CAM reconciliations, fixed assets, and revenue/expense recognition. Proficiency in accounting and ERP systems, Excel, and financial modeling tools; ability to design and refine reports and workflows. Proven people leadership skills, including managing, mentoring, and developing an accounting team. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail. Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively with operations, asset management, and senior leadership. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent professional certification is strongly preferred. Several years of progressive accounting experience, including prior experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller, ideally in real estate or a related industry.
