The Supervisor, Ultrasound oversees the day-to-day activities of the Ultrasound area. The Supervisor is responsible for the operation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment for the performance of all dynamic ultrasound imaging procedures at a technical level not requiring direct supervision.

Major Responsibilities:

• Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
• Recommends and assists in managing budgets for the areas managed.
• Coordinates the assignment of tasks for the efficient utilization of available resources.
• Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation.
• Obtains scans per physician orders in an efficient, timely manner, according to departmental policy and procedures.
• Prepares, utilizes and operates ultrasound equipment, supplies and rooms according to departmental policies and procedures.
• Follows sterile techniques according to hospital policy.
• Checks equipment for proper functioning prior to patient examination.
• Greets patients politely and efficiently.
• Clearly explains procedures to patients in English and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan.
• Seeks out Interpreter Services if needed.
• Gathers and records patient history. Assesses patient's ability to withstand procedure.
• Obtains, reviews and completes patient consent forms prior to starting procedures.
• Perform sonographic examinations using equipment and techniques specific to the modality, anatomy, pathology, physiology and area of interest requested. Positions patient on examining table to ensure a quality diagnostic image is produced.
• Monitors video display of area being scanned and adjusts density or contrast to improve picture quality.
• Reviews and evaluates images or computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.
• Dates, labels and marks images accurately and sends to PACS according to departmental policy.
• Records, processes and maintains patient data.
• Presents cases to a radiologist for review.
• Follows all Quality Control policies and procedures for compliance with departmental, local, state and federal regulations.
• Collaborates with other medical team and administrative staff members, such as physicians and nurses, to conduct special procedures or complete administrative duties.
• Arranges for scheduled maintenance and minor emergency repairs on ultrasound equipment, or informs manager of problems with equipment or supplies.
• Performs all duties with strict adherence to and compliance with government regulations, hospital policies and procedures, and safety guidelines.
• Responsible for overseeing that all staff credentials are up to date. Maintains documentation for continuing education credits, CPR and other training, registration and licensure.
• Rotates through call schedule as required.
• Meets established productivity standards.
• Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.
• Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.

• Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
• Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
• Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
• Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

Standard Supervisor Level Responsibilities:

• Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork, motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
• Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
• Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
• Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
• Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
• Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
• Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
• Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
• Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.
• Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

Position Qualifications:

• License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. High school graduate or equivalent. 2. Completion of and graduation from a formal ultrasound technology program in an AMA-approved school. 3. Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or eligible. Must be CPR certified and keep certification current.
• Experience/Skills: Required: 1. Ability to direct, lead and motivate staff. 2. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, basic principles of diagnostic medical ultrasound, patient care and preparation, legal and ethical aspects of ultrasonographic practice, departmental protocols, and diagnostic protocols. 3. Outstanding oral communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to explain procedures and results to patients while keeping them safe, relaxed and comfortable. 4. Strong organizational skills. 5. Ability to keep accurate and detailed written notes for charts and other documentation. 6. Strong mathematical and scientific skills to analyze information. 7. Ability to operate ultrasound scanning equipment and probes. 8. Ability to follow procedures and policies. 9. Ability to process, review and evaluate images or computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. 10. Ability to record, process and maintain detailed and accurate patient data, and medical histories. Prepares all documentation in a timely manner. 11. Ability to work effectively collaborate with medical staff, personnel, students, and patients. 12. Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English. 13. A minimum of 4 years clinical ultrasound experience plus lead or supervisory experience.
