Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Affirmative Litigation Paralegal for a temp-to-hire opportunity in Fresno, CA. This role supports civil litigation and advocacy efforts focused on housing-related matters, tenant defense, and legal services for low-income, elderly, and disabled individuals.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist attorneys with drafting pleadings, discovery, legal documents, document management, and case management for housing-related civil litigation matters.
- Interview clients, assess case facts, conduct investigations, and provide high-quality client support consistent with program priorities.
- Participate in weekly case review meetings and follow established case review policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with advocates, client groups, community-based service providers, and other stakeholders on matters of mutual interest.
- Attend trainings, stay current on legal developments, and assist with training and education coordination as needed.
- Carry out program policies and procedures while performing additional legal support duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits

- Pay range: $21.00 to $32.00 per hour.

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Provide civil litigation support in housing cases, including pleadings, discovery, document organization, and case management.
- Conduct client interviews, fact investigations, legal research, case review, and problem solving.
- Support attorneys and advocates in client-centered legal services and community advocacy.
- Participate in case review meetings, trainings, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

- 3 to 5 years of relevant paralegal, legal assistant, or civil litigation support experience preferred for this level of role.
- Experience providing civil litigation support in a law firm, legal department, nonprofit legal services organization, or equivalent setting.
- Knowledge of court proceedings, litigation procedures, and general civil case management.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, housing rights, tenant defense, and related legal issues.
- Ability to conduct client interviews, investigations, legal research, analytical reasoning, case review, and problem solving.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Commitment to serving low-income individuals, elderly persons, disabled persons, and diverse communities.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment and maintain effective relationships at all organizational levels and with the public.
- Proficiency with PC systems and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and relevant databases.
- Reliable transportation, valid California driver’s license, and appropriate auto insurance.
- Education, training, and experience sufficient to meet the requirements of California Business and Professions Code Section 6450.
- Documentation of at least one qualifying paralegal credential, including a certificate of completion from an American Bar Association approved paralegal program.

Preferred Qualifications

- Prior experience with housing law, tenant defense, eviction defense, or public interest legal services.
- Experience working with community-based organizations, client groups, or culturally diverse populations.
- Bilingual skills may be helpful in supporting diverse client communities.
