Library Assistant I - Adult Services

This position supports the work of the Adult Services department primarily by staffing the librarys Welcome Desk providing prompt and accurate information readers advisory and technology assistance to library users via phone email and in person. Other job duties include but are not limited to: collection maintenance support reading program support and preparation of displays booklists and other materials.

Essential Job Functions

• Assists patrons at the Welcome Desk with a variety of circulation information and technical needs including copying/scanning/faxing.
• Assists patrons with the use of computers and other technology including e-readers and other mobile devices.
• Performs readers advisory and reference services for patrons.
• Assists with projects relating to collection development including selection of library materials as assigned.
• Maintains the confidentiality of library records.
• May assist with library programs preparation of promotional materials and other projects/activities as needed.
• Performs other duties as required.

High school diploma or GED required; additional coursework in library studies preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge ability and skills:

Knowledge of

• Working knowledge of library methods and procedures.
• Requires fluency in English.

Ability to

• Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively with staff and public and maintain effective public relations.
• Ability to operate library equipment properly.

Skill in

• Requires keyboarding filing and office programming ability copy machine fax machine telephone audio-visual equipment Microsoft Office Suite and LinkCat.

Requirements of Work

• Some evening and weekend hours required.
• Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences.
• Proficiency in Spanish desired.

• Work is performed mostly in a Library setting; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit stand walk talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle feel or operate objects tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or to stand for prolonged periods of time.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and pushing and pulling objects on wheels weighing 60-80 pounds.
