Vice President Operations

The Vice President of Operations is responsible for leading all operational functions of a commercial, light industrial HVAC and mechanical services organization. This includes oversight of project execution, service operations, maintenance programs, and work across a diverse portfolio of commercial and industrial clients.

This role focuses on delivering complex mechanical projects, optimizing field operations, driving profitability, and ensuring consistent execution across multiple job sites. The VP of Operations will play a critical role in scaling operations, improving processes, and supporting long-term strategic growth.

Overall Responsibilities

Operational & Project Leadership

• Lead all operations including Construction, Controls, and HVAC Services, lines of the business
• Oversee execution projects from pre-construction through closeout
• Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with contract documents
• Standardize project management practices, documentation, and reporting in collaboration with Leadership Team and internal teammates in related departments
• Coordinate closely with estimating, engineering, and sales teams to ensure smooth project turnover

Financial & P&L Management

• Own and manage operational P&L, including revenue, gross margin, and cost control
• Drive project profitability through labor efficiency, procurement strategy, and change order management
• Review job costing, WIP reports, and backlog to ensure financial performance targets are met
• Partner with finance and estimating on bid strategy, risk assessment, and margin improvement

Field Execution & Workforce Management

• Lead and develop service leadership
• Improve field productivity, labor utilization, and team planning
• Support workforce planning for large-scale and multi-site projects
• Ensure proper staffing, training, and certification of technicians and field personnel

Client & Contract Management

• Maintain relationships with general contractors, facility managers, property managers, and industrial clients
• Participate in key client meetings, and project reviews
• Resolve escalated project or service issues with customer facing solutions-oriented approach
• Support business development on strategic accounts and large opportunities

Safety, Quality & Compliance

• Champion a strong safety culture across all jobsites and service operations
• Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, local codes, and contractual requirements
• Implement quality control programs to ensure workmanship meets specifications and industry standards
• Monitor risk and enforce best practices in high-liability environments

Process Improvement & Systems

• Drive operational efficiency through process standardization and continuous improvement
• Implement and optimize project management and field service platforms as applicable
• Utilize data and KPIs to improve forecasting, scheduling, and execution
• Lead initiatives around lean construction and operational excellence

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 10–15+ years of leadership experience in commercial HVAC, mechanical contracting, or MEP services
• Strong background in managing large-scale commercial and light industrial mechanical projects
• Demonstrated P&L ownership and experience managing multimillion-dollar operations
• Deep understanding of project management, estimating, and field operations
• Experience with operations and construction ERP systems
• MBA or advanced degree preferred
• Experience working with general contractors and negotiated/plan-spec projects
• Familiarity with union labor environments
• Experience with design-build and design-assist delivery methods
