Senior Consultant, Underwriting Life

Role Description

As a Life Underwriting Sr. Consultant, you’ll be at the forefront of our mission—analyzing complex cases, making high-stakes decisions, and collaborating with top-tier financial professionals to craft winning solutions. You’ll bring your expertise to the table, working autonomously with the authority to make competitive offers, all while mentoring others and shaping the future of underwriting.

What You’ll Do:

• Underwrite sophisticated life insurance applications with autonomy and precision
• Lead initiatives, mentor peers, and serve as a go-to expert
• Partner closely with sales and financial professionals to understand client needs and deliver competitive, tailored solutions
• Drive innovation through accelerated and intelligent underwriting strategies
• Represent Nationwide at industry events and help shape best practices

Qualifications

• 10+ years of life underwriting experience
• FALU, CLU, FLMI, and EKG certification preferred
• Strong financial acumen and advanced risk assessment skills
• A collaborative spirit and a passion for continuous learning
• Confidence and flexibility in making complex decisions and influencing outcomes

Requirements

• Receives, evaluates and underwrites complex applications for life insurance
• Maintains in-depth knowledge of manuals, underwriting materials, rules, regulations, and procedures
• Evaluates applications requiring additional evidence of insurability
• Develops a strong understanding of the accelerated underwriting process
• Consults with other underwriters and accepts referred cases when designated
• Evaluates and appraises data derived from personal or business financial information
• Reaches terms on, coordinates, and negotiates reinsurance on complex situations
• Works on special projects with little to no direction
• Determines eligibility for temporary insurance and authorizes disbursement of policy refunds
• Interprets electrocardiogram tracings as evidence for life insurance applications
• Consults with Chief Underwriter, Staff Underwriting, and Medical Director as needed
• Supports and assists in meeting goals and objectives for varying territories
• Resolves challenges with effective solutions
• Handles up to $20,000,000 for life and $1,500,000 for morbidity underwriting
