Senior Associate Attorney - Nonprofit Law

We are seeking an experienced Senior Associate Attorney with a strong background in nonprofit and transactional law to provide thoughtful and practical legal guidance and regulatory compliance support to our clients. Active California bar admission is strongly preferred, as many of our clients operate in California and require California-specific legal guidance. Compensation, Benefits, and Work Environment For Purpose Law Group is intentionally structured differently from traditional law firms. This is a full-time attorney role with a defined billing requirement that is intentionally lower than what is typical at many traditional law firms. This model allows our attorneys to focus on thoughtful, high-quality legal work while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This structure reflects our belief that attorneys should be able to build meaningful and sustainable careers without the extreme billing pressures common in most firms. At the same time, attorneys are still expected to remain actively engaged in their matters, meet their billing expectations, and contribute consistently as full-time members of the team. FPLG also offers an Attorney Incentive Bonus Program, providing additional compensation opportunities for attorneys who exceed their baseline performance expectations. The firm may also award discretionary bonuses based on overall performance and contributions to the success of the firm. Requirements Key Responsibilities Advise nonprofit organizations and mission-driven entities on legal and regulatory requirements, including federal tax-exemption, fundraising, and compliance matters. Draft and review contracts and other legal agreements. Prepare and revise corporate formation documents and applications for state and federal tax exemption. Advise clients on corporate governance, policies, procedures, and organizational best practices. Ensure ongoing corporate and regulatory compliance at both federal and state levels. Analyze legal risk and organizational structure options, including corporations, partnerships, joint ventures, and limited liability companies. Draft governance documents, internal policies, and other organizational documents for nonprofit clients. Advise clients on a range of operational legal matters, including employment, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance issues. Provide legal counsel during administrative proceedings, regulatory matters, or board discussions when necessary. Expectations for Attorneys at FPLG Attorneys at FPLG are trusted professionals who take ownership of their matters and actively move client work forward. In This Role You Will Conduct preliminary legal strategy sessions to assess client needs and develop practical legal strategies that align with each organization’s goals and operational realities. Take ownership of assigned matters, exercising sound judgment and accountability in moving each matter forward efficiently and proactively. Develop and maintain the critical path for assigned matters, ensuring tasks are properly planned, updated as work evolves, and completed in a timely and organized manner. Advise clients at key decision points and provide clear legal options that allow leaders to make informed decisions while understanding both legal requirements and practical implications. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client communications and matter progress. Provide clear quotes or estimates for legal work when appropriate and communicate proactively with clients regarding scope, costs, and progress. Collaborate with the legal team and broader firm to ensure a seamless and positive client experience. Consistently meet monthly billing requirements while maintaining efficient time management and high-quality client service. Achieve quarterly Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that support both personal and firm‑wide success. Contribute to a collaborative and growth‑oriented team culture through training, knowledge sharing, and professional development. They are aligned with our mission and motivated by helping nonprofits and purpose-driven organizations succeed. Qualifications J.D. from an accredited law school. Active license to practice law in California strongly preferred. Attorneys licensed in other states are welcome to apply, particularly those with experience advising nonprofit organizations, but the ability to advise California clients is highly valuable for this role. 3–6 years of legal experience, preferably with exposure to nonprofit law, business law, or a related field. Strong commitment to mission-driven organizations and the social impact sector. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative remote team environment. Strong organizational and project management skills. Comfortable using legal technology, case management systems, and digital collaboration tools. Required Skills Exceptional research, writing, and analytical skills. Strong problem‑solving abilities and attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal and client communication skills. Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines in a dynamic environment. Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy while exercising sound judgment, professionalism, and accountability for assigned matters. Strong time management and billing discipline, including the ability to accurately track, record, and manage billable time. Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues across all departments, contributing to a unified firm‑wide team environment. High level of professional integrity, reliability, and personal accountability. Comfort with legal research software and case management systems. Strong technological proficiency and comfort working in a fully remote, cloud‑based environment using digital tools and platforms. Strong aptitude for learning and utilizing new technology to streamline legal processes.
