Lead Service Engineer - Manassas, VA

TRC Talent Solutions is partnering with a controls and automation organization seeking a Lead Service Engineer / Specialist to provide advanced technical leadership within a mission-critical service environment. This role combines hands-on controls troubleshooting with higher-level responsibility for service execution, escalation support, and coordination across engineering and customer stakeholders.

Summary

The Lead Service Engineer / Specialist is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and uptime of control systems operating in 24/7 environments. This role functions as a senior technical resource within the service organization, handling complex troubleshooting, leading incident resolution efforts, and supporting system optimization. The position also contributes to project execution, upgrades, commissioning support, and limited customer-facing technical advisory work.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, maintain, and update control systems in live operational environments

• Diagnose and resolve complex control system issues and implement corrective actions

• Monitor service channels (phone, email, ticketing systems) and respond to incidents within SLA requirements

• Track KPIs and support continuous improvement of service delivery performance

• Serve as escalation point for advanced troubleshooting and system reliability issues

• Ensure system uptime and operational stability across supported platforms

• Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation and respond to critical system failures as required

• Review P&IDs and develop instrumentation lists

• Prepare and maintain technical documentation and system configuration records

• Configure HMI screens and PLC/DDC/DCS control logic

• Support system networking, integration, and architecture-level troubleshooting

• Assist with onsite startup, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning

• Provide technical training and support during system handover activities

• Support identification and scoping of additional service opportunities

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)

• Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems in industrial or building automation environments

• Experience with one or more of the following platforms:

  • Tridium Niagara N4

  • Distech (BACnet, LON, Eclypse Controllers)

  • Johnson Controls (Metasys, Facility Explorer)

  • Siemens (Apogee, Talon, DXR, Desigo CC/Insight)

  • Rockwell Automation (FactoryTalk, RSLogix/Studio 5000, PlantPAx)

• Strong experience troubleshooting live control systems in high-availability environments

• Understanding of HVAC systems, P&IDs, and functional testing methodologies

• Ability to participate in 24/7 on-call rotation and respond to critical incidents
