Position Overview

Join our team as a Veterinary Assistant who supports the veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.

At Paws, Whiskers & Claws Veterinary Hospital in Marietta, Georgia, we practice ethical medicine (we are a no declaw practice) while focusing on OUR quality of life as well as our patients'. We work hard but smart so that we allow for excellent patient care and client education while preserving our personal time.

We specialize in complex disease management, heavy in internal medical and behavioral problems. Dr Luoma, our Medical Director, who graduated from the University of Georgia in 2019, practices detail oriented, education focused medicine alongside certified cat behavior consultant Ingrid Johnson. Together, they micromanage each cat's quality of life from every aspect and help their owners understand what their cat needs and why.

Education and hands on instruction are the hallmark of our success. Our appointments for new clients and patients are one and a half hours long since there is so much to learn about each patient and then teach each owner about what their cat needs to thrive. Regular appointments are one hour, and tech appointments are 30 minutes. We never double book. Ingrid is also our resident groomer so humane handling and restraint skills are needed to assist with these appointments in a Fear Free manner.

Clients come to us because they want to treat; they want to do something for their cat(s). Too many vets do not give owners the knowledge or options of what to do with a diagnosis, if they even obtain one.

We value continuing education for ourselves so that we stay current for our clients who have high expectations of our knowledge and abilities. We want to pass on all that we have learned to an assistant/technician who is eager to practice and learn the intricacies of feline medicine and what we have learned over the past 20 years. Our staff are all Fear Free certified and will happily help a new employee achieve this certification as well.

We welcome new ideas and ways to improve upon what and how we care for our patients and their owners. We hope a new assistant/technician will bring knowledge and skills to add to our acumen. However, we are also willing to teach needed skills for the person who is the right ethical fit.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate care to all patients
• Greet patients and their owners as they arrive and show them to an examining room, taking the patient's weight and other vital signs upon arrival
• Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by the licensed veterinary technicians (LVT's).
• Calm and soothe anxious patients
• Assist doctors and technicians with the administration of medications or with patient restraint
• Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
• Operate and maintain hospital equipment, including EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, and machines, etc.
• Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, maintain proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
• Feed patients as prescribed by the attending doctor or as the client has requested; record appetites; recognize and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors
• Communicate in a positive manner with clients and ensure that they feel comfortable leaving their pet(s)
• Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans
• Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital each day; clean equipment, kennels, and facilities using chemicals and supplies; ensure the safe use of chemicals; complete laundry
• Bath and care for patients who stay overnight; ensure that every animal released is clean and properly groomed prior to their release
• Adhere to the hospital's safety and wellness regulations
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions
• Maintain accurate medical records
• Show up for work regularly; full-time presence at work is essential for every shift
• Promote hospital products and services and support the organization
• Respond respectfully with urgency to directions given by Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT).
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager; may have other assigned duties if working in a specialty area (i.e., dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, internal medicine, etc.)

Qualifications

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to be considered for this position
• Heavy on customer service and client education.
  
• Ideally passionate about cats, able to draw blood, urine, take blood pressures, and humanely restrain
• Fear Free certified would be great!
• Not a lot of hospitalization or surgery

Schedule

• Open to Full-Time and Part-Time
• Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9am-5:30pm, and alternating Saturdays from 9am-1pm

Pay Range

$15—$19 USD
