Voltus builds power capacity at scale. We provide reliable, clean capacity alongside traditional power plants in wholesale electricity markets. Voltus enables faster, cleaner, lower-cost capacity by optimizing existing infrastructure rather than waiting years for new generation to come online. Our sales team builds the customer relationships that make this possible, working directly with the facilities, manufacturers, and institutions whose participation adds capacity to the grid.

The Role

Voltus is seeking a Sales Director for the PJM territory to build and grow a book of commercial and industrial customers across the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes region.

Demand response is no longer a niche program. As load growth strains grid infrastructure and wholesale electricity markets evolve, the value of flexible, distributed capacity is increasing. This role puts you at the center of that shift, working directly with the facilities, manufacturers, and institutions whose participation translates into real grid capacity and real revenue for their organizations.

The right candidate does not wait for inbound leads or a warm introduction. They pick up the phone, learn the market, and build their pipeline from scratch. Energy background is not required. The ability to sell consultatively to operational and financial buyers is.

This is a remote role. Candidates must be based in the United States, with a preference for candidates located in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, or New Jersey. Some travel required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prospect and generate your own pipeline through outbound cold calling, email outreach, and self-sourced lead development across the territory
  • Own the full sales cycle from initial cold call through contract close on net-new accounts
  • Build and manage relationships with Facility Managers, Operations leaders, and financial decision makers at hospitals, universities, large manufacturers, and municipalities
  • Educate prospective customers on Voltus's demand response programs and translate grid economics into operational and financial value for each account
  • Meet activity-based expectations in Q1 and transition into quota-carrying performance from Q2 onward
  • Maintain accurate pipeline data, forecasting, and deal activity in CRM
  • Collaborate with your Regional Sales Manager and peer SDs to share market intelligence, refine outreach strategy, and improve close rates over time

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven track record of self-generated outbound prospecting and closing net-new business. Phone-based cold calling is core to how this team builds pipeline, and candidates whose experience is limited to managing a handed book of business are not a fit for this role.
  • Experience selling into commercial and industrial accounts. Existing relationships with hospital groups, universities, large manufacturers, or municipalities in the region are a strong plus.
  • Energy industry background is not required. Some of our best performers came from outside the space, but familiarity with energy markets, brokers, or C&I energy buyers accelerates ramp.
  • Coachable and feedback-oriented, with a long-term mindset. Year one is a ramp, but the renewal commission structure means your book grows significantly in years two and three.
  • Comfortable with self-direction in Q1. Activity metrics drive the first quarter rather than quota.

$110,000 - $110,000 a year Base pay is $110,000 USD annually, with a variable target of $40,000–$60,000 (commission guaranteed at a minimum of $10,000/quarter in year one) with meaningful upside in years two and three as your revenue generating customers compounds. Please note that at this time, we do not sponsor visas or transfers for new hires. Voltus teammates need to be authorized to work from their home location (in the US or Canada, unless otherwise indicated on the role description).

Additionally, while Voltus is an all-remote workplace, we have limitations on where employees are able to work for regulatory and security reasons. We expect that Voltans are working primarily from their home country. Working while traveling to other countries must be approved as per our Global Remote Travel Policy.
