Highway Maintenance Specialist – Fairplay, CO Are you interested in obtaining a Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B? This position requires a valid CDL Permit and the opportunity to obtain a CDL Class A or B within six months of hire. Responsibilities Daily work activities vary by project needs, weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on‑call on a rotating basis and respond to weather and other emergencies. The main job activities include: Plowing snow Operating heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractor mowers, and hard‑tread tractors Mowing grass and weeds Removing debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt Digging ditches Installing and repairing guardrail, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting Filling potholes and roadway cracks Setting out signs and cones for traffic control Removing and covering graffiti Installing pavement markings and striping Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment Work Environment Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, and dusts Use of personal protective equipment and chemical handling Work near traffic, including high‑speed traffic Use of ladders and scissor lifts up to 20 feet Operation of CDOT vehicles and response to emergencies outside regular hours, which may include overtime, weekends, and holidays Ability to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and elevations up to 12,000 feet Qualifications Minimum Qualifications At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience Current, valid regular driver’s license and CDL Permit Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B, with no restriction on air brakes, within six months of hire Pass a pre‑employment screening that may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks May be required to pass a controlled substance test (drug test) and DOT physical On‑call work and shift work, including essential services designation and ability to report without delay to provide essential or emergency services May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes of the workplace under normal weather conditions Preferred Qualifications Strong commitment to safety Desire to learn and grow Enjoys outdoor work and physically demanding tasks Takes pride in a job well done and adapts to changing conditions Works effectively in a team and looks out for teammates Communicates effectively, especially in safety‑critical situations Committed to good customer service Problem‑solving orientation Experience operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, and backhoes Experience using hand tools Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software or equipment State service experience related to the duties of this position Conditions of Employment Ability to obtain and retain a CDL Class A or B within seven months of hire Pre‑employment screening and drug testing Mandatory shift and on‑call work, including response to emergencies outside regular hours Possible requirement to live within thirty (30) minutes of the workplace and to provide reliable emergency contact information Required maintenance training: new hires two weeks; veteran employees one week annually Possibility of obtaining a Hazardous Materials endorsement within one to 1½ years Compensation and Benefits Hourly rate: $25.67, with overtime at $38.50 per hour. Annualized hourly rate includes a $500 monthly housing stipend, totaling $59,400 annually ($53,400 base pay and $6,000 housing stipend). Base pay is $2,053.85 every two weeks.
