A valid Colorado Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without air‑brake restrictions is required. The role requires a passion for safety, travel, and hands‑on repair and improvements. Compensation & Benefits Base pay: $2,053.85 biweekly ($53,400 annually). The position includes an additional $1,000/month housing stipend, an annualized hourly rate of $25.67, and an overtime rate of $38.50. What You Will Do No two days are the same. You will perform a variety of maintenance duties, respond to weather emergencies on a rotating on‑call schedule, and work within a team that includes lead specialists and support staff. Your Main Job Activities Plow snow Operate heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, and tractor mowers Maintain vegetation by mowing grass and weeds Remove debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels Shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt Dig ditches Install and repair guardrail, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting Fill potholes and roadway cracks Set out signs and cones for traffic control Remove and cover graffiti Install pavement markings/striping Stop or slow traffic in emergencies Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs Follow safety guidance and wear appropriate safety equipment Work Environment Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, and dust Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators if required Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of 10–20 feet Required to drive CDOT vehicles Frequent emergency response outside regular hours, including overtime and weekends Must be physically able to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and elevations up to 12,000 feet Minimum Qualifications At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience Preferred Qualifications Strong commitment to safety and continuous learning Enjoys outdoor, physically demanding work Problem‑solving mindset and pride in high‑quality work Team player who looks out for teammates Effective communication in safety‑critical situations Customer‑service orientation Experience with single and tandem axle dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, etc. Experience using hand tools Basic computer skills and adaptability to new software/equipment State service experience related to duties of this position Conditions of Employment Maintain a valid CDL Class A or B without air‑brake restriction for Colorado operations If holding a non‑Colorado CDL, must be eligible to drive in Colorado at hire; relocation requires CDL transfer within 30 days Pass a pre‑employment screening (SSN trace, criminal records, educational records, driving records) and may be required to pass a drug test and DOT physical On‑call and shift work, including rotating on‑call schedule and response to emergencies Essential Services designation: must respond promptly to emergencies and be available to work overtime, weekends, and holidays May need to live within thirty (30) minutes driving time of a response station; knowledge of emergency conditions may trigger a “report to workstation” notification New employees complete two weeks of maintenance training; veteran employees complete one week annually; training performed online or at Aurora location May be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months–1 year as a condition of appointment Must provide a reachable telephone number for emergency response Equal Opportunity Employer CDOT’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in our hiring practices.
