Highway Maintenance Specialist – Crook Applications considered from residents and non‑residents of Colorado. The anticipated start date is no earlier than July 2026. Base pay is $2,053.85 biweekly ($53,400 annually). Overtime rate is $38.50/hour. What You Will Do No two days are exactly the same; tasks vary by project, weather, and road conditions. You will be on‑call on a rotating basis and may answer emergency calls. Work in a team environment with a lead specialist and other specialists. Plow snow. Operate heavy equipment (tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower, etc.). Mow grass and weeds. Remove debris (rock, mud, deceased animals). Remove debris from culverts and tunnels. Shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt. Dig ditches. Install and repair guardrail, highway markers and signs, warning signs, and lighting. Fill potholes and roadway cracks. Set out signs and cones for traffic control. Remove and cover graffiti. Install pavement markings/striping. Stop or slow traffic in emergency situations. Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs. Follow safety guidance and wear proper safety equipment. Opportunities to learn new equipment. Opportunities for advancement. Your Work Environment Exposure to loud noise. Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, and dusts that may affect breathing, eyes, or skin. Requirement to use appropriate personal protective equipment. Requirement to work with chemicals and cleaning products. Some equipment requires respirators. Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic. Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10’–20’. Requirement to drive CDOT vehicles. Frequent response to emergencies outside regular hours; may include overtime, weekends, holidays. Must be physically able to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and up to 12,000 ft elevation. Minimum Qualifications At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience. Preferred Qualifications Strong commitment to working safely. Desire to learn. Conditions of Employment Must possess and maintain a valid CDL Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes. If you have a non‑Colorado CDL, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado at hire and transfer within 30 days if you relocate. Must pass pre‑employment screening (social security trace, criminal records, public court records, educational records, and driving records). May be required to pass a controlled substance test and DOT physical. On‑call work on a rotating basis. Shift work. Essential Services Designation – must report immediately for emergency services. May be required to live within 30 minutes’ driving time to respond. New employees receive two weeks of maintenance training; veterans one week per year. May be required to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year. Must respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including weekend/holiday overtime. Must provide a phone number reachable for emergencies.
