Highway Maintenance Specialist - Fairplay- $500 Housing Stipend (CDL Training Provided w/ Permit)

Job Overview This position is for a Highway Maintenance Specialist located in Fairplay, Colorado. The role involves on‑site maintenance of Colorado state highways, including snow removal, paved surfaces, vegetation, debris, and traffic control. The Specialist will work with a team under the direction of a Lead Highway Maintenance Specialist and respond to emergencies and weather‑related incidents. Responsibilities Plow snow and clear roads in winter conditions. Operate heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, front‑end loaders, tractors, and mowers. Mow grass and weeding and remove debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels. Shovel gravel, sand, concrete and asphalt; dig ditches as required. Install, repair, and maintain guardrails, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting. Fill potholes and repair roadway cracks. Set out signs and cones for traffic control and manage temporary traffic arrangements. Remove and cover graffiti; install pavement markings and striping. Stop or slow traffic in emergency situations. Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs. Follow safety guidance and use personal protective equipment. Benefits and Compensation Hourly rate: $25.67 with overtime at $38.50 per hour. Annualized compensation: $59,400 (base $53,400 + $6,000 housing stipend). Housing stipend: $500 per month for eligible locations. Full payment for CDL physical exam after the first year; partial reimbursement for CDL renewal. CPR and first‑aid training; variety of career training opportunities. 40‑hour work week with overtime during weather emergencies; summer schedules include 4½‑day work week (10‑hour days, Monday‑Thursday). Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergencies outside regular hours. Ability to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold) and at elevations up to 12,000 feet. Minimum Qualifications At least two years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience. Preferred Qualifications Strong commitment to safety and desire to learn. Enjoyment of outdoor, physically demanding work. Team player who looks out for colleagues and communicates effectively. Customer service orientation and problem‑solving mindset. Experience operating dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, and similar equipment. Experience with hand tools and basic computer skills. State service experience related to the duties described. Conditions of Employment Maintain a current, valid regular driver’s license and CDL Permit. Obtain and maintain a Class A or B CDL (no air brake restriction) within six months of hire. Pass a pre‑employment screening: criminal background check, driving records, and possible substance use test. Participate in training: new hires complete two weeks; veteran employees one week annually. Be available on‑call and shift work, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Respond promptly to emergency calls; may be required to live within 30 minutes of workplace.
