Highway Maintenance Specialist - Superior

Highway Maintenance Specialist – Superior (CDOT) Location: Superior, CO. Anticipated start date: July 13th, 2026. Base pay: $2,053.85 biweekly ($53,400 annually). Additional $1,000/month housing stipend. Hourly rate: $25.67; overtime: $38.50. Description of Job No two days are exactly the same in CDOT highway maintenance. Your daily work activities change based on project needs, weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on-call on a rotating basis and may be called to respond to weather and other emergencies. You will typically work in a team environment, with at least one lead and multiple specialists at each patrol location. Main Job Activities Plowing snow Operating heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractor mowers, etc. Mowing grass and weeds Removing debris from roadways, including rock, mud, and deceased animals Removing debris from culverts, tunnels, and similar structures Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt Digging ditches Installing and repairing guardrails, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting Filling potholes and roadway cracks Setting out signs and cones for traffic control Removing and covering graffiti Installing pavement markings/striping Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment Impact You Will Have Your work is critical to keeping Colorado’s roadways open and safe, positively impacting the quality of life for all Coloradans and visitors and supporting the state’s economy. What CDOT Provides Personal protective equipment (uniforms, boots, hard hats, gloves, safety vest, respirator, and tools) Full payment for your CDL physical after the first year with CDOT Partial reimbursement (up to 50%) for CDL renewal after the first year with CDOT CPR and first‑aid training Variety of career training opportunities 40‑hour work weeks with opportunities for overtime during weather emergencies 4‑day work schedule (10‑hour days Monday‑Thursday) during the summer months (May through September) Opportunities to learn new equipment Opportunities for advancement Competitive medical, dental and vision insurance, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending and health savings accounts PERA retirement, optional 401(k) plans, generous paid time off package, tuition reimbursement and professional development Public Service Loan Forgiveness for eligible positions Your Work Environment Exposure to loud noise Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment Required to work with chemicals and cleaning products Equipment that may require the use of respirators Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10–20 feet Required to drive CDOT vehicles Frequently respond to emergencies outside regular work hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays Must be willing and physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time Minimum Qualifications At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience Preferred Qualifications Strong commitment to safety Desire to learn and adapt efficiently to changing conditions and priorities Willingness to work outdoors and perform physically demanding work Takes pride in a job well done Works effectively in a team environment and looks out for team members Communicates effectively, especially in safety‑critical situations Strong commitment to providing good customer service Ability to solve problems and innovate Experience operating equipment such as single and tandem‑axle dump trucks, front‑end loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, etc. Experience using hand tools Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software/equipment State services experience related to the duties of this position (preferred) Conditions of Employment Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado Non‑Colorado CDL holders must be eligible to drive in Colorado at time of hire; those relocating to Colorado must transfer their CDL within 30 days of relocation Pass a pre‑employment screening (social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, driving records checks) May be required to pass a controlled substance test (drug test) and a DOT physical through a medical provider On‑call work on a rotating basis and may be called to respond to emergencies Shift work, possibly including nights, weekends, and holidays Required to report immediately to provide essential or emergency services for health, safety, and welfare May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to respond timely to work notifications New employees undergo two weeks of maintenance training; veteran employees undergo one week of training each year, completed via computer or at the Aurora location May be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year as a condition of appointment Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays Must provide a telephone number for emergency contact EEO Statement CDOT’s strength is our people, and our commitment to our people is to shape, support, and sustain the employee experience.
