Highway Maintenance Lead Specialist (TM II) - Pueblo Traffic (CDL Required)

This position is only open to Colorado state residents. New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year. Base pay for this position is typically $58,872-$64,752 per year. This vacancy is a lead Highway Maintenance Specialist (TM II) / Traffic, located out of Pueblo. This position is responsible for leading a patrol and overseeing general maintenance activities for a designated area. It includes operating heavy construction equipment, performing skilled work under hazardous and adverse conditions, and maintaining facilities and equipment to original condition. Major Duties and Responsibilities Plan and schedule daily activities, develop work plans for patrol employees, review progress, identify training needs, and provide feedback, on‑job training and mentoring; input performance appraisal recommendations; conduct tailgate safety talks. Ensure patrol attends all required training; perform worksite, night and roadway inventory inspections. Maintain roadway surface by hand patching, roto‑milling, machine patching, crack‑sealing, blade existing unpaved shoulders, build or restore unpaved shoulders, stock pile, etc. Maintain roadside facilities by cleaning and replacing drainage structures, repairing streambeds and ditches, slope repair, clearing mud and rock slides, fence, gate and sound barrier maintenance, litter‑barrel and trash cleanup, machine sweeping, and hand sweeping. Provide traffic services such as installing and replacing single post signs, delineators and reference posts, metal guard rails, concrete rail, pavement marking removal, roadway warning devices, energy attenuators, and courtesy assistance. Maintain roadside appearance through vegetation control, hand mowing, weeding, tree trimming and removal. Conduct bridge/structure maintenance and repair including visual inspection, cleaning, deck repair, crack and joint sealing, roto‑milling, painting, bearing maintenance, substructure repair, approach slab and slope protection, and deck expansion device maintenance. Control snow and ice by removing snow, applying traction, controlling ice, stock piling, and installing or repairing snow fences. Maintain and repair equipment, buildings and grounds. Complete required paperwork and reports; use SAP for work orders, timesheets and other entries. Trim and remove trees; remove graffiti. Operate a variety of light to heavy equipment. Ensure proper use of PPE by patrol. Assist other patrols as needed. Other duties as assigned. Work Environment Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, dusts, chemicals and cleaning products. Use of respirators and other protective equipment. Work with heavy traffic and in proximity to it. Use of ladders and scissor lifts up to 20 feet. Operate heavy equipment such as backhoe, tractor, bucket truck, forklift, skid steer, loader, aerial devices. Drive CDOT vehicles. Exposure to high voltage and electrical shock. Night‑only and weekend positions; frequent emergencies outside regular hours; possible overtime including weekends and holidays. Physically able to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather and elevations up to 12,000 feet. Use computers daily; average week 40 hours with occasional overtime. Must read, understand and follow oral and written instructions. Minimum Qualifications At least three (3) years of experience in road or highway maintenance. Examples of Road/Highway Maintenance Experience Repairing potholes; performing asphalt or concrete paving operations; operating bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, truck loaders and other heavy equipment; maintaining right‑of‑way fences; performing street striping and marking; mechanical mowing, bridge, roadside ditch and culvert cleaning; installing or maintaining roadway signs, guardrails; operating sweepers; conducting traffic control; and performing mechanical snow removal. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Major Duties section. Years of state service related to this position. Experience scheduling and planning daily work for subordinates. Comprehensive knowledge of Emergency Response Guidelines, MUTCD, Colorado's Chain Law, FMCS Regulation, CDL Manual, MLOS standards, CDOT Policies. Valid Colorado CDL Class A or B with hazardous and tanker endorsements. Experience operating heavy equipment and training others. Experience using hand tools and performing physically demanding work. Positive attitude, strong safety commitment, oral and written communication, ability to lead and mentor, customer service skills, project management skills. Ability to react safely in emergencies, learn quickly, adapt to changes, effective teamwork, familiarity with SAP, MS Office, Gmail and quick software learning.
