Student Assistant, STEM Mobile Science Lab (FWS Only)

The STEM Mobile Science Lab Student Assistant is a part-time non-benefitted position that supports STEM outreach and educational programming throughout the service area by assisting with the operation of the Mobile Science Lab. This position provides hands-on support for outreach events science activities equipment preparation and interaction with students educators and community members. The Student Assistant plays an important role in promoting STEM education and creating positive learning experiences for participants particularly elementary-aged students.

Compensation: $13.33/hr.

Starting Date: As soon as practical after the hiring process.

Principal Responsibilities and Results KSAs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: this position is non-exempt and is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive but representative other duties may be assigned).

Position may include one or more of the following duties or others as assigned:

• Help set up operate and tear down Mobile Science Lab equipment displays and educational activities.
• Engage with visitors and participants during outreach events providing a welcoming and positive experience.
• Assist elementary-aged students with hands-on STEM activities and demonstrations.
• Explain STEM concepts and activities in an age-appropriate manner under staff supervision.
• Support the general maintenance cleaning organization and appearance of the Mobile Science Lab.
• Help inventory stock and organize supplies materials and equipment.
• Assist with loading and unloading outreach materials and equipment.
• Follow safety procedures and help maintain a safe learning environment for participants.
• Represent the institution professionally when interacting with students educators parents and community members.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Other responsibilities may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

• While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required
• There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students past employees and/or students members of the general public and others who express opinions may exhibit strong emotions which will require the employee to interact professionally diplomatically and appropriately in such situations
• While performing the essential duties of this position an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways meeting rooms and other parts of the campus facilities
• There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting standing and personal computer use which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
• An employee must frequently lift and/or move 10 - 15 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision distance vision and ability to adjust focus
• The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however there may be instances of somewhat loud environments when working with certain tools and outside environments.
• The work environment is mainly outdoors and inside the mobile trailer.

Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications :

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study employment.
• Admission at LCCC and continued enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester (Exceptions may be given for summer term with supervisor approval) .
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with children particularly elementary-aged students.
• Dependable responsible and able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to follow directions and maintain a professional demeanor.
• Willingness to learn STEM-related activities and educational demonstrations.

Preferred Qualifications :

• Interest in science technology engineering mathematics (STEM) or education.
• Experience working with youth tutoring mentoring or participating in outreach activities.
• Experience with customer service public engagement or event support.
