Position Summary
As the IEP and School Advocacy Lead at Toriven, you will play a key role in supporting families navigating the Ontario school system and advocating for appropriate educational supports for their children.
Many families lack clear guidance on what supports their child is entitled to receive and how to effectively advocate within school board processes. In this role, you will provide structured, knowledgeable guidance to help families navigate IEP development, IPRC processes, and school-based decision-making with confidence.
This is a virtual, consultative role. You will support families across Ontario through direct consultation, preparation for school meetings, and participation in school-related discussions, while working closely with a multidisciplinary clinical team.
This role provides consultative support and does not constitute legal or formal educational representation. Guidance is provided to support families in navigating school systems effectively within existing regulatory frameworks.
What You Will Do
IEP Advocacy & School Navigation (70%)
- Review and interpret IEPs with families, explaining plan components in clear, practical language and identifying gaps based on the child's profile.
- Prepare families for school meetings (IEP reviews, IPRC meetings, school board consultations), including documentation, positioning, and communication strategies.
- Attend school meetings virtually as a knowledgeable advocate supporting families in navigating school board processes.
- Guide families through accommodation planning, supporting formal requests for appropriate accommodations, modifications, and supports.
- Provide consultation to educators and school teams, sharing clinical insights to support student outcomes.
- Deliver parent coaching to support effective advocacy and implementation of strategies in the home environment.
- Collaborate with the Learning and Academic Lead to ensure alignment between academic support plans and school advocacy strategies.
Clinical Support & Team Collaboration (30%)
- Participate in multidisciplinary case consultation alongside psychologists, SLPs, and the Learning and Academic Lead.
- Identify when psychoeducational assessment would strengthen advocacy outcomes and facilitate referrals to the psychology team.
- Support families in translating assessment findings into clear, actionable school-based recommendations.
- Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with OCSWSSW standards and Toriven policies.
What You Bring
- Deep working knowledge of Ontario's special education framework, including the Education Act, Regulation 181/98, the IPRC process, and IEP development standards.
- Demonstrated experience attending IEP meetings, IPRC proceedings, or school board consultations.
- Strong ability to translate complex educational and regulatory language into clear, actionable guidance for families.
- Understanding of how learning disabilities, ADHD, ASD, and mental health presentations impact school functioning and required supports.
- Experience delivering services virtually across geographically diverse populations.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary, team-based care model.
Qualifications
- Master's in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program.
- Current OCSWSSW registration (RSW), in good standing with no conditions.
- Demonstrated experience in IEP advocacy, school board navigation, or special education consultation in Ontario.
- Working knowledge of Ontario's Education Act, Regulation 181/98, and the IPRC process.
- Clean Vulnerable Sector Screening (Ontario — mandatory).
- Authorized to work and reside in Ontario.
- French language proficiency considered an asset.
