Transmission Line Construction Manager (Travel)

Job Description The Transmission Line Construction Manager oversees the successful execution of transmission line projects from the field level, acting as the primary bridge between the field construction activities and the project management team. This role serves as the on-site quarterback for complex transmission line construction work, ensuring that safety, quality, schedule, and environmental requirements are consistently met. The Construction Manager spends significant time coordinating, documenting, and reporting project activities while leading field teams and aligning contractors with project expectations. Responsibilities Take ownership of project success at the field level and act as the primary liaison between field operations and the project manager. Thoroughly review and understand all contract documents and ensure that construction activities align with contractual requirements. Review, understand, and enforce the contractor’s safety plan, working collaboratively to correct any gaps or inconsistencies. Lead and participate in project kickoff meetings to clearly communicate expectations, scope, and standards to contractors and internal teams. Ensure a comprehensive site-specific orientation is conducted, including review of permits, road use agreements, crossing agreements, SWPPP requirements, haul routes, drawings, materials, schedules, QA/QC processes, and engineering submittals. Set clear expectations for the field team, provide leadership, and train team members on procedures, safety, and quality standards. Oversee site safety orientation and ensure adherence to the site-specific safety plan. Complete safety assessments and CILs using the designated systems (such as Unifier) and ensure they are documented accurately. Collect and maintain accurate project data independently, rather than relying solely on contractor-provided information. Prepare and maintain thorough documentation, including weekly reports, QA/QC records, and site photographs, and submit them in a timely manner. Build and maintain a professional working relationship with contractors to support collaboration and project success. Remain actively engaged in daily project activities with a strong focus on safety, ensuring that all personnel work in a safe manner. Monitor and enforce quality standards by understanding project specifications and drawings, minimizing rework and associated safety risks. Track project schedules, including internal schedules (such as C1) and contractor schedules (such as P-6), and ensure alignment with project milestones. Track construction progress and approve CSU entries, ensuring that project tracking spreadsheets remain accurate and up to date. Monitor environmental constraints before and during work activities, ensuring compliance with SWPPP and other environmental requirements. Stay actively involved in outage and crossing coordination, working alongside the contractor rather than delegating this responsibility entirely. Promote a shared responsibility mindset between the owner and the contractor to achieve zero injuries, maintain schedule, and deliver a high-quality project. Collect accurate field data for reporting purposes and ensure that reports are fully accurate, as they are used for management and executive-level decision making. Manage and coordinate the field team to gather all necessary information required for comprehensive and accurate reporting. Maintain thorough documentation to support potential change order disputes, recognizing that incomplete or inaccurate documentation can result in additional project costs. Communicate frequently and clearly with the project manager, providing context and history of information to support decision making and problem resolution. Prepare and submit all required reports and documentation by the established weekly deadline (for example, Friday by 5 p.m. project time). Utilize environmental team members to conduct third-party audits of contractors, serve as a resource for environmental questions, and help ensure environmental compliance. Ensure that environmental specialists do not directly manage crews or communicate instructions to contractors without coordination through the Construction Manager. Coordinate with ISC/expeditor resources to manage materials, oversee delivery schedules, locate missing materials, and work with vendors to improve shipping dates. Engage the safety team as a key resource to improve safety performance through conversations, CILs, and interventions when contractors do not follow safety rules. Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) in disciplines such as civil, structural, construction, and electrical to solve technical issues and improve project outcomes. Work with land agents to plan activities, manage relationships with challenging landowners, and understand land agreements and restrictions affecting the project. Ensure that land agents do not directly manage crews or communicate instructions to contractors without coordination through the Construction Manager. Perform additional tasks as needed to meet the minimum expectations of a Construction Manager and support overall project success. Essential Skills Proven experience in construction management within transmission line or similar large-scale utility construction projects. Strong knowledge of contract documents and the ability to interpret and apply contractual requirements in the field. Demonstrated ability to understand, implement, and enforce contractor safety plans and site-specific safety programs. Experience leading preconstruction activities, including kickoff meetings, site orientations, and expectation setting for contractors and internal teams. Ability to read and interpret permits, road use agreements, crossing agreements, SWPPP documents, haul routes, drawings, material lists, schedules, and QA/QC requirements. Strong leadership skills with the ability to set expectations, lead, and train field teams in safety, quality, and operational procedures. Proficiency in completing safety assessments and CILs using systems such as Unifier or similar platforms. Ability to independently collect, verify, and maintain accurate project data without relying solely on contractor inputs. Strong documentation and reporting skills, including the preparation of detailed weekly reports, QA/QC documentation, and photographic records. Solid understanding of project specifications and drawings with the ability to monitor and enforce quality standards in the field. Experience with project scheduling tools and processes, including familiarity with internal and contractor schedules (such as C1 and P-6). Capability to track project progress, manage CSU approvals, and maintain accurate project tracking spreadsheets. Knowledge of environmental compliance requirements, including SWPPP, and the ability to monitor and enforce environmental constraints during construction. Effective communication skills for coordinating with project managers, contractors, environmental teams, safety teams, SMEs, and land agents. Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and resources while maintaining accountability for safety, quality, schedule, and documentation. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with large utility or energy-sector transmission line departments on construction management initiatives. Familiarity with QA/QC processes and tools, including the use of systems such as Unifier for quality and documentation workflows. Experience collaborating with environmental professionals, safety teams, and subject matter experts across civil, structural, construction, and electrical disciplines. Experience coordinating with land agents and managing relationships with landowners under various land agreements. Comfort working in a rapidly growing organization with long-term infrastructure development plans over a 10-20 year horizon. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to use specialized resources and experts to address technical and operational challenges. Ability to adapt to additional responsibilities beyond the minimum expectations of a Construction Manager as project needs evolve. Work Environment This role is based in the Las Vegas area and involves a combination of field and office work within a transmission line construction environment. The Construction Manager spends significant time on active construction sites overseeing crews, monitoring safety and environmental compliance, and coordinating with contractors, while also working at a computer to manage documentation, schedules, reports, and project tracking tools. The work environment includes collaboration with environmental teams, safety professionals, subject matter experts, material expeditors, and land agents, all focused on delivering safe, high-quality transmission line projects on schedule. Projects are part of a large, long-term growth program in the transmission sector, offering exposure to complex, utility-scale infrastructure work. Work hours align with project needs and reporting deadlines, and the role requires consistent presence in the field to lead by example and maintain close oversight of construction activities.
