Research Professional Position Summary: The Weiss Lab at the University of Georgia’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Professional to join our laboratory and contribute to drug discovery studies in models of neurodegenerative disorders. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in conducting preclinical research aimed at identifying novel therapeutic targets and evaluating potential treatments for these conditions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting‑edge research in a collaborative and dynamic environment and will provide multidisciplinary training in mammalian cell culture, preclinical drug discovery, glycobiology, and structural analysis of glycans. Minimum Qualifications : Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Preferred Qualifications : Candidates should hold a B.S. or Ph.D. in biochemistry or a related discipline. Responsibilities Drug screening and biochemical assays, mammalian tissue/cell culture, and lab management. Application of CRISPR/Cas9 technologies, high‑throughput drug screening, and mass spectrometry applications. Preparation of writing reports, mentoring students/trainees, protocol optimization, and some method development. Independent experimental design and leadership: lead the design, execution, and troubleshooting of experiments focusing on glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis and related research objectives; integrate new methodologies into the lab and mentor junior researchers. Data analysis and deliverables: analyze and interpret data for high‑impact deliverables, including publications, conference presentations, and grant submissions; oversee the lab during PI absences, coordinating projects and ensuring research progress. Lab operations and budget management: maintain lab safety compliance, organize spaces for efficiency, manage data for adherence to FAIR principles, and serve as the point of contact for administrative and infrastructure needs. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Extensive hands‑on experience with mammalian cell culture and biochemical assay development, preferably in the context of drug discovery or neurodegenerative research. Extensive prior experience with human cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques is an absolute requirement. Strong communication and organizational skills and fluency in written and spoken English are essential, as is the ability to work in a collaborative scientific environment.
