Assistant Engineer II

We are hiring an Assistant Engineer II located at Headquarters, Los Angeles, California. Job Summary In this role, you will provide critical technical support while undergoing extensive on‑the‑job training to master the complexities of water operations, planning, and resource management. Drawing on your bachelor’s degree and professional background, you will assist in analyzing data, developing demand forecasts, and making recommendations for system optimization. You will also play a key role in data management, water distribution system modeling, and the development and implementation of water resources programs, gaining hands‑on experience on how Metropolitan strategizes and operates based on hydrologic conditions. You will assist with operational coordination, participate in cross‑functional meetings, and support the management of operational changes. This position is designed for a detail‑oriented professional ready to apply Metropolitan’s operating principles to real‑world challenges, offering the mentorship and project exposure necessary to ensure the reliability and sustainability of Southern California’s water resources. What You’ll Do Assist in preparing short‑term and long‑term water demand forecasts for operational planning, water sales forecasting, supply‑demand modeling, and water delivery scheduling. Assist in maintaining data systems and databases that support water operations and planning. Participate in internal and external coordination meetings focused on demand, supply, programs, database management, and operational strategies. Assist with implementing and managing water supply and operations programs. Support a range of studies, reports, and data requests using MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access) and other analytical tools to perform data analysis and develop reports, graphics, and presentations. Develop an understanding of system operations and apply Metropolitan’s operating principles to support informed operational decision‑making. Work collaboratively across teams and contribute to ongoing projects and initiatives across Metropolitan. Schedule 44/36 schedule. Start times are no earlier than 6 am and end times are no later than 6 pm. Hybrid Work Schedule Metropolitan’s current practice for this position is a hybrid work schedule: typically two days a week in person and the other days remote. This schedule may change based on organizational needs. A telework policy is under negotiation and will provide final direction on the hybrid schedule. Employment Standards – Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and two years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Assistant Engineer I level. Relevant/Related Experience Experience assisting with any of the following: water field, water resources, system operations, groundwater basin management; short and long‑term planning related to water demand forecasting and facility shutdown coordination; data management and analysis; hydraulic or distribution system modeling. Certifications, Licenses, and Registration Requirements Valid California Class C driver’s license or equivalent (required at application).
