Summary This position performs Cardiac Ultrasound on all inpatients and outpatients. An Ultrasound Technologist is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional that is qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice includes those procedures permitted by law for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, demonstrated competency, and completed the appropriate American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) specialty certification(s). The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the lab, patient scheduling, equipment maintenance, reporting equipment failures, and quality improvement (QI). The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self‑motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Responsibilities Performs core cardiac sonographer procedures, including transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography, with or without contrast, and diagnostic sonography examinations according to defined imaging protocols for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Analyses sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Prepares equipment, transports patients as needed, explains the procedure to the patient, performs the exam, records the exam, consults with the physician/provider as needed, and performs accurate pre‑ and post‑processing of files and reports, utilizing Cardiovascular Services computer systems and programs. Certifications and Licensures Basic Life Support (BLS) ARDMS: Ultrasound Technologist (or equivalent ULTRA C II, ARDMS, or CCI certification) Required Education Associate’s Degree required. Bachelor of Science degree preferred. Minimum two (2) years of experience in sonography preferred. Employees hired before 2010 are exempt from the associate’s degree requirement but must meet experience, certification/licensure, training, and ongoing skills competency. Other Duties and Responsibilities Records all patient data appropriately. Utilizes IV Optison contrast and/or agitated saline as required for procedures according to protocols. Monitors the patient’s physical and mental condition throughout the entire procedure. Participates in obtaining and/or maintaining ultrasound lab accreditation. Maintains ultrasound equipment, work area, and adequate supplies. Provides excellent customer service. Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy toward all employees, physicians, associated staff, and MyMichigan Health customers and potential customers. Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends and participates in departmental and hospital meetings. Performs other work‑related duties as assigned, including assisting in other areas of the department as needed. Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows and may participate in further learning opportunities by MyMichigan Health. Experience, Training and Skills Current compliance with continuing medical education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate and ARDMS or CCI re‑credentialing yearly requirements to maintain active registrant status. Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels, both in person and by phone. Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes if required for the position. Can move freely around the facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform all job functions as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing necessary, with or without assisted devices. Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow MyMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, cooperate with others, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay alert. Overall dexterity required, including handling, reaching, grasping, and repeating movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical demand level: Light.
