Essential Job Duties Patrol an assigned area on radio car, motorcycle, or on foot to observe and report suspicious activities or hazardous conditions for the prevention and detection of crime; arrest law violators in accordance with statutory and case law. Respond to routine and emergency calls for protection of life and property and enforcement of City, County, State, and Federal laws, codes and ordinances. Investigate crimes, accidents, deaths and disturbances; collect, preserve, and present evidence using scientific identification techniques; interview, question, or take statements from victims, witnesses, suspects and complete investigative reports. Direct traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow at emergencies or congested places, stop unsafe drivers, issue citations or warnings as appropriate. Appear in court to present evidence and testimony in criminal prosecution or civil cases; serve writs, warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents. Provide information and direction to the public; assist in developing community policing strategies; maintain effective public relations and make public service appearances. Provide emergency first aid and/or assistance to injured or incapacitated persons and request additional emergency medical services as necessary. Search, guard, transport, and assist in the booking and custodial care of prisoners. Handle missing person cases; take custody of runaway or delinquent juveniles; investigate child welfare cases involving potential mental, physical or sexual abuse. Assist with emergency or planned events, including natural disasters, fires, parades and crowd control; participate in special details and assignments. Direct, instruct, and supervise officers in training; conduct in‑service or briefing training. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of modern police methods and procedures, statutory and case laws related to evidence, search and seizure, City and Department policies and procedures, local geography, demographics, community concerns, community‑oriented policing, and problem‑solving, information technology and related software applications. Ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations, follow written and verbal directions, interpret and explain laws, regulations, operate public safety equipment including computers and related applications, and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and fellow employees. Education and Experience Must possess a California P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certificate, and have completed the P.O.S.T. Basic Academy. Applicants separated from active law enforcement for more than three years must repeat the State Basic Training Standards and cannot be considered for appointment on a lateral entry basis. High school graduate or equivalent. Completion of 45 semester (or equivalent quarter) units from an accredited college or university is preferred. Bilingual skills are preferred. Physical Demands Requires standing, walking, handling, handling, talking, hearing, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, occasionally climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting or smelling, and lifting up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 100+ pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Compensation and Benefits Salary range: $7,391 – $9,432 annually, DOQ/DOE. Additional specialty pays: Detective (5%), Motor Officer (5%), FTO (2.5‑5%), SDAT/Firearms Instructor (2.5%), SWAT (2.5%), HNT (1%), MAIT (1%), CSI (1%). Shift differential (3‑5%) and P.O.S.T. Certificate Pay (3% Intermediate, 5% Advanced). Retirement: Part of the Marin County Employees Retirement Association (MCERA) with reciprocity; details include Classic Tier2 Employees, PEPRA employees, etc. Health Insurance: Full‑flex cafeteria plan with various contribution levels.
