Medical Laboratory Technologist Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Technologist prepares specimens for microscope examination. Performs manual and automated routine medical lab tests such as urinalyses and blood counts. Being a Medical Laboratory Technologist conducts only waived and moderate level testing as classified by CLIA. Operates laboratory equipment including centrifuges, dry bath incubators, and blood bank refrigerators. In addition, Medical Laboratory Technologist typically requires an associate’s degree of Lab science. Typically reports to a Medical Technologist. Requires certification by ASCP or AMT. Requires passing a national exam given by the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Medical Laboratory Technologist’s years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position’s specialty is the main requirement.

  • Monitoring supply inventory and identifying any products required;
  • Maintaining accurate, legible, and complete records according to Current Good Manufacturing Procedures (cGMP’s).

Requirements:

  • Strong mathematical, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • MLT (ASCP) preferred, MT(ASCP) preferred certification designation Open to new graduates with certification pending;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • New York State Medical Technologist license;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology OR;
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the biological or chemical/physical sciences plus year of pertinent clinical laboratory experience.
