Duties

As a Public Health Advisor (Quarantine Program) you will:

Plan and implement a regional Public Health Quarantine Program.
Assist in planning and implementing a program for mitigating the importation of communicable diseases from abroad and spread of these diseases domestically.
Determine appropriate disposition of passengers/crew or cargo.
Issue surveillance orders on international arriving passengers when the possibility of a quarantinable disease exists.
Perform emergency response functions during a domestic or international public health emergency or event per established program goals and objectives.
Design a program for mitigating the introduction and spread of communicable disease by analyzing disease trends.

Promotion potential: Yes, This position has promotion potential to GS-12. Subject to temporary duty assignment at any location in the United States and its territories or possessions, in foreign countries, or at sea.
Subject to permanent reassignment to another CDC Quarantine Station as the needs of the service warrant.
Subject to shift work, weekend work, to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (independent of approved tour-of-duty).
Subject to be rostered for the CDC Ready Responder program and participate in response activities.
The incumbent is required to be current in his or her immunizations as per ACIP guidelines.
The incumbent must undergo baseline and periodic health screening procedures such as respirator fit testing and PPD tests for tuberculosis exposure.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for GS-11:

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: conducting surveillance of passengers, crew and cargo on international and/or domestic transportations to prevent the importation of communicable diseases from abroad and spread of these diseases domestically.

Education: Have a PhD in Public Health or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.

Combination of education and experience: Have a combination of experience and education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

Minimum Qualifications for GS-12:

To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: conducting surveillance of passengers, crew and cargo on international and/or domestic transportations to prevent the importation of communicable diseases from abroad and spread of these diseases domestically; and planning and implementing a public health quarantine program.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
